November Concert Unites Two Worlds and Two Names.
After 62 seasons, Melbourne Municipal Band will officially transform into Melbourne BandWorks on Wednesday, Nov. 4, during a concert that unites its two major ensembles, Symphonic Winds and the 3-2-1 Jazz Orchestra.
The original name for the group that conductor A.V. ‘Chick’ Catterton founded in 1965 described the organization when it was founded---with the help and support of the city of Melbourne---simply as a concert band. The nonprofit organization has since grown over the years to include ten different ensembles and many musicians with a wide range of musical experiences.

“It's not just a concert band anymore,” said Signature Winds conductor Staci Rosbury.

In addition to Signature Winds and the 3-2-1 Jazz Orchestra, Melbourne BandWorks ensembles include the Rock & Roll Revue, Adagio Sax Quartet, Sunshine Brass Quintet, Swingtime Trombone Quintet, Swingtimers Vocal Trio, the Oh Golly Dixieland Band and the two latest specialty ensembles, the Melbourne Horn Club and Brevard Brass.

Melbourne BandWorks officially unveils its new brand during the Nov. 4 concert at the group’s preferred venue, the Melbourne Auditorium, 625 E. Hibiscus Blvd. For the “Two Worlds, One Stage” concert, which by the way, is free, BandWorks will showcase its two largest ensembles, Symphonic Winds---formerly known as the MMB Concert Band---and the 3-2-1 Jazz Orchestra. Winds maestro Staci Rosbury and 3-2-1 conductor Kurt Schulenburg will combine the talents of both of their groups into a performance that showcases the best of both ensembles. Each group will have their own time in the spotlight before combining forces for a finale that should bring down the house. The performance starts at 7 p.m., preceded at 6 p.m. by the Sunshine Brass Quintet, another BandWorks ensemble.

“What makes this concert interesting is that you’re hearing two very different ensembles, each with its own personality and musical language, and then watching those worlds come together,” Schulenburg explained.

The ensembles will zig and zag through a variety of musical genres, at times aided by guest vocalists Krystal Clarke and Michael Mirand, who will sing with the 3-2-1 Orchestra.
“There’s quite a variety in the program, but the common thread is that we want the audience to have a good time and hear these musicians doing something a little different,” Schulenburg said.
While admission costs nothing, seats are first come, first served. To snag a good seat, arrive early and enjoy the Sunshine Brass Quintet while celebrating the new name for one of Brevard’s oldest musical groups, Melbourne BandWorks.

The band's 80-plus members and auxiliary volunteer 30,000 hours of their time each year in the form of rehearsals and performances.
