Behavior may help someone:
✔ Express emotions
✔ Escape discomfort
✔ Gain attention
✔ Access preferred items

Why does ABA focus on understanding behavior?

When we identify WHY behaviors happen, we can:
✔ Teach communication skills
✔ Reduce frustration

Example:
📚 Completing homework to stop reminders
🎧 Putting on headphones to reduce loud noise

The behavior increases because something uncomfortable was removed.

Negative reinforcement is often misunderstood—but it’s simply part of how behavior works.

🧠 Positive and negative don’t mean “good” or “bad.”

In ABA:
➕ Positive = adding something
➖ Negative = removing something

Examples:
✔ Positive reinforcement = adding praise
✔ Negative reinforcement = removing discomfort after a desired behavior

These terms describe HOW behavior changes happen—not whether something is “good” or “bad.”

⚠️ Understanding punishment in ABA.

Punishment refers to strategies that decrease the likelihood of a behavior happening again.

But here’s what’s important:
💙 ABA focuses heavily on teaching replacement skills and reinforcing positive behaviors.

Our goal is always:
✔ Skill-building
✔ Safety
✔ Communication
✔ Positive growth

Behavior support should always be compassionate and individualized.
