Let’s talk real.
Real motherhood.
Real surviving.
Real struggles.
Real wins.
Real feelings!

Because far too often we tend to believe we are the only ones going through a season of thick with a sleepless baby, or a strained relationship, or the mental burn out being a mother can result in!

You’re not alone, and would be a lot more understood than you think

So I ask you, how is motherhood going?
What’s your highs and lows this week? Let’s talk

Story time: Epidural Edition (negative review!) 💉

This is my personal story I’d like to share simply to share awareness of possible side effects of epidural pain medication. In no way am I “anti-epidural” for everyone but myself 😅

When I was in labor with my first born, now almost 11 years ago, I decided to get an epidural.

I signed the consents and thought all my problems would be solved!

Well…it failed. All that had gone numb for me was my right leg. It gave me the ability to rest after 17 hours of labor, thankfully! But I was still able to feel when I had an episiotomy and the stitches that followed after birth.

One week postpartum I bent over to pick something up off the ground and immediately felt the “bee sting” sensation shoot down my leg and I was stuck bent over for a very short while.

I share this story specifically today, because I am knocked down in bed with a migraine. I don’t get them often these days, but one of the worst side effects of the epidural for me has been migraines.

I had never had a migraine before birth. And for the next 3 years after I struggled with persistent migraines. I also had extreme sensitivity to the injection site. My “spot” we refer to it as! Nothing, and I mean, NOTHING helped with the pain for the next 7 years! Until I started working for a chiropractor ( )and I decided to give it a try.

Luckily for me, the chiropractic care also came with the use of a cold laser. I swear that thing up and down CURED the nerve damage I was walking around with for 7 years within a couple of sessions!

After the body work I was finally able to start putting the migraines and nerve damage behind me but I sit here today with a migraine and my kids sent out with loved ones.

I’ve gotten really good at handling and treating them.

So for me, I prefer to birth my babies with no epidural because the side effects of this common labor tool can come with side effects that are not worth it to me!

Did you have any unexpected side effects from an epidural, or are you the favorite? 🙌

Midwives and Ob/Gyns provide care during pregnancy. In many countries, a midwife is the standard of care unless higher level of care is needed. In the US, most people work with an OB/GYN. This is not because obstetricians improve outcomes for all, but rather our system has more ob/gyns available than midwives.

This has started to change with increased midwifery programs and public health working towards reducing maternity care deserts in the US. Research shows that the midwifery model of care is safe, and in some cases improves outcomes.

Did you work with a midwife or an Ob/gyn for your pregnancies? Did you get to work with both?

Needing support, care, and guidance during birth does NOT equal needing someone to tell you what to do.

Birth is POWERFUL. Birth is INTENSE. Birth does NOT require permission.

"Can I get up?"
"May I eat?"
"Am I allowed to push?"

Women giving birth shouldn't feel like they need to ask those things. "I need to get up. I'm hungry. I feel like I need to push."

Prenatal care, midwives, OBs, nurses, should create a space where birthing people feel CONFIDENT to say what they need.

"You need to lay down."
"You're not allowed to push yet. Wait for the doctor."
"We don't allow people to...."

Women don't need permission to birth. They need space. They need support. They need guidance with respect for autonomy.

Did you feel empowered by your birth? Or did you feel like others were in charge of you?

“I’m just going to….(insert intervention technique)” is not consent!
You deserve the right to know exactly what is being recommended to you with facts and evidence, honest reasoning, and the time to reflect with your partner if you would like to continue, receive an alternative, decline, or wait.

"NO, no you are NOT going to break my waters."
"NO, you are NOT going to check me AGAIN after just an hour."
"NO we are NOT going to speed up MY labor."
"NO, you are NOT hooking that thing in my baby's scalp."
