Fall is my favorite reminder that breathing is about more than relaxing. I’m thinking about how our bodies work.
Every breath you take through your nose gets filtered, warmed, and humidified before it reaches your lungs. Your sinuses produce nitric oxide, and breathing through your nose carries it into your lungs. Healthy airflow and oxygen exchange helps defend against germs. Mouth breathing isn’t the same as nasal breathing. We are also talking about supportive tongue posture, jaw development, sleep, and your voice when we talk about a closed mouth breath.
When we breathe through our mouths out of habit, especially at night, it can lead to challenges like snoring, poor sleep, a tired voice and coughing, jaw tension, dental changes, or a nervous system that does not quite settle.
The the work we do at Evolved Therapy: myofunctional therapy, airway support, breathing retraining, and voice can support you. It’s science based and personalized, and it changes how people sleep, speak, and feel.
Now this fall while the leaves are letting go, notice your breath. Is your mouth closed? Is your tongue resting on the roof of your mouth? Are you breathing low and slow through your nose?
If that feels like hard work we can help you.
