Anger is one of the most stigmatized emotions in the mental health conversation. People are often embarrassed to admit that anger is the thing they struggle with most. But unmanaged anger has real costs -- to your relationships, your work, and your own wellbeing -- and it responds well to treatment.

Everyone experiences anger from time to time. Sometimes the things that trigger your anger can leave you feeling out of control, causing you to lash out at others, causing stress and health problems for yourself, and making it feel impossible to calm down. If your anger has reached this stage, worki...

After enduring years of childhood abuse and neglect, Mary Beth O'Connor turned to methamphetamine as a way to numb emotional pain her nervous system was never equipped to process. But getting sober wasn't the hardest part. The real challenge began when the numbing stopped.
Together, Mary Beth and I unpack what happens when buried emotions finally surface, why trauma leaves the brain and body stuck in survival mode, and how hypervigilance, anxiety, and even obsessive-compulsive behaviors can emerge as desperate attempts to regain a sense of safety and control.
Mary Beth shares her deeply personal journey through recovery, explaining how therapy helped her learn to tolerate emotional distress rather than escape it, gradually rewiring patterns that had been in place since childhood. Although triggers still arise today, she has developed the awareness and tools to recognize what is happening internally, regulate her nervous system, and let those moments pass without returning to addiction.
This conversation is a powerful reminder that healing isn't about eliminating triggers, it's about changing your relationship with them.

Therapy looks different than it did 20 years ago. The tools have expanded, the approaches are more personalized, and the research behind what actually works has gotten significantly stronger. If a previous experience with therapy didn't help, that doesn't mean therapy won't.

Why do old traumas sometimes come rushing back when life takes an unexpected turn? Why can pressure, illness, or uncertainty trigger emotional patterns that quietly shape the way we think, lead, and make decisions?

When life becomes overwhelming, it’s rarely performance that fails first. It’s clarity.

That was one of the most powerful insights from my conversation with executive coach, healthcare leadership strategist, and two-time cancer survivor Savio P. Clemente on What Triggers You?

We explored how unresolved trauma, emotional triggers, and uncertainty quietly shape the way we think, lead, and make decisions, often long before we realize it.

In this episode, we discuss:
• Why trauma can resurface years later through new life experiences
• The difference between surviving adversity and truly healing from it
• How our bodies often recognize emotional danger before our minds do
• Why resilience isn’t about pushing harder, it’s about creating space for reflection, self-awareness, and clarity
• Savio’s ALOHA Resilience Framework for navigating life’s most difficult moments

As a trauma therapist, I see every day how people continue functioning while carrying invisible emotional burdens beneath the surface. This conversation is a reminder that healing isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about becoming curious enough to ask better questions.

Whether you’re a healthcare leader, clinician, or simply navigating life’s inevitable challenges, I hope this episode offers a new perspective on resilience, trauma, and what it truly means to move forward.

Stacy Pellettieri and Savio P. Clemente explore trauma, emotional triggers, resilience, and finding clarity through life's hardest moments.

EMDR is one of the most effective treatments available for trauma and PTSD. It's also widely misunderstood. If you've heard of it but aren't sure what it actually involves or whether it might be right for you, our EMDR page explains the approach clearly and honestly.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for Trauma, Anxiety, and Emotional Healing Trauma can leave lasting effects on the mind and body. Even after the event has passed, certain memories, sounds, or sensations can continue to cause emotional distress, anxiety, or physical tension. EMDR...
