Yesterday’s topic at the Rebos house meeting was baggage.

When it was my turn to speak, I wanted to make one thing very clear, especially for the guys who are new to sobriety

I’m over 5 years sober, and I’m still clearing baggage.

We didn’t mess everything up overnight, and we’re definitely not going to fix everything overnight.

Some baggage is extremely heavy. Some of it can be repaired. Some of it can’t and that’s okay.

There are going to be times in recovery when it feels like you’re running in place. That’s okay too. It’s going backwards that gets us.

I’m not saying ignore the baggage. We have to inventory it. Look at what we’re carrying, come up with a plan, fix what can be fixed, make amends where we can, and prepare ourselves to accept the things we cannot change.

There is no timeline on recovery.

Trying to unpack every piece of baggage at once can be overwhelming, especially when you’re new to sobriety. Handle what’s in front of you today. Then wake up tomorrow and do it again.

And if you’re new here, I’m proud of you.

You don’t have to have everything figured out today.

Just don’t go backwards.

Sometimes the person who gets under our skin the most is the person who reminds us of who we used to be.

Today's AA Daily Reflection is a reminder that recovery isn't just about putting down the bottle or the drugs.

It's about taking a good, hard look at ourselves.
The pride. The selfishness. The need to be right. The times we think the rules shouldn't apply to us.

Sobriety doesn't automatically make those things disappear. We have to keep doing the work.

Glad you’re here!

Bronson came to the men’s house meeting last night and apparently decided the meeting was about him.

My man went around collecting scratches, belly rubs, and attention from everybody in the house like he’d been coming to meetings his whole life.

But I’ll tell you something… there’s something cool about watching a dog bring a little peace into a room full of men who are working hard to rebuild their lives.

Sometimes recovery looks like deep conversations and working steps.

Sometimes it looks like a bunch of grown men loving on Bronson.

Safe to say he’ll be invited back.

My name is Zach (Z) Cates, my sobriety date is August 30th, 2025 and I am a former resident of Rebos Recovery Men’s House. The following is a part of my story & the impact Rebos has made (and still makes) on my life:

I started my true recovery journey at Serenity Recovery Centers when I checked in on September 15, 2025 for their 45 day program. While at Serenity, one Friday night, the guest speaker for our meeting brought with him a former Serenity client and current Rebos resident named Brayden to tell his story. At that time he was 6 months sober and he shared the impact that Rebos was currently making in his life. As I listened to him speak I somehow knew that Rebos was where I needed to go upon completion of my program at Serenity and the next Monday I told my counselor of my desire to go to Rebos as my next step on this journey.

It’s important to understand, when I went to Serenity I felt hopeless and did not even begin to imagine that sobriety was truly possible for me. I had been to a treatment center in Indiana that cost thousands per day, had a great program, all the amenities of a country club with a pool, basketball court, personal therapist and several psychiatrists on site and yet still I was trapped in my addiction. My thought was that I already “knew” what I needed to know and if that place was unsuccessful with all it had to offer, what could this “state funded” facility do for me?? The simple answer: the difference was me, this time I had suffered enough pain and torment from hiding my pain with drugs and alcohol.

I completed 55 days at Serenity and was accepted in at Rebos. I arrived to Rebos on November 7th, 2025 nervous, unsure and new to this way of life. My disease tried to tell me again that I was hopeless, I should just give up, I’ll never be able stay sober. The only part of what my disease told me in truth was “I’ll never be able to stay sober”, but GOD has kept me sober!! The guys at Rebos welcomed me with open arms, showed me true love and concern for my well-being and encouraged me every moment of every day. I met Cody and Kasey and immediately could tell their hearts were filled with love for recovery and seeing others overcome the same demons that tried to destroy them. I made friends quickly there and began to do what was suggested for me to find recovery (go to meetings, study the Big Book, get a sponsor, work the steps, lean on God & let him have complete control). Rebos helped me gain the needed structure for sober living, helped understand the value and necessities of boundaries, following the rules and just focus on life one day at a time. Rebos was not only a “roof over my head”, it was my actual home. It was a support system. It was unconditional love. It was direction. It was STABILITY like I’ve not had in almost 25 years of addiction.

The friends I’ve made through Rebos have become my sober family, people that I deeply care about and love. These are people who love me for just being who I am, people who truly cheer me on and want to see me succeed. Cody, Kasey, Ben, Jessica, Gary and Marty are all instrumental in my life. They are true friends whom I know I can talk to about anything life throws my way. I have so many things to be grateful for in my life today. Rebos does the work in the trenches that no one wants to do. Rebos aided me in learning to live life on life’s terms.

Today, I work a job I enjoy, I attend a church that I love with a God-sent pastor and church family that exhibits true God-love for everyone (I found my church because it was across the street from Rebos). I sing on the Praise Team at my church. I have been offered a position to work for Serenity Recovery Center to help others find their way. I have two men at Rebos that I am helping work their steps. I am no longer homeless as I have my own place to call home. All these things have been provided by God and made possible because of Rebos being a place to give me the structure, encouragement, boost and direction I desperately needed but thought I’d never have.

I go back to Rebos regularly to try to encourage new guys and show them that this life is possible if you do the work. I am eternally grateful for the impact of Rebos in my life!!

On June 22, 2022, I made the decision to change my life. On June 22, 2026, I celebrated 4 YEARS clean. ❤️

When I left Rebos, I never could have imagined where life would take me. I’ve been to Rebos a few times now, and I’ve met some incredibly strong women in recovery who I still call friends to this day. Those experiences helped build me into the woman, mother, and sister I am today.

I moved out of Memphis, and my partner and I now have a house of our own outside of Knoxville. We have a beautiful 2-year-old daughter, and my life is so full these days. And it all started at that little house on Tutwiler.

They welcomed me, made me feel safe, and gave me a place to begin figuring out my new life without substances. I’ll always be grateful for that.

This message is for all the women who are still struggling: if I can do it, so can you. ❤️ Your life can change in ways you can’t even imagine yet. Women DO recover.

In January 2023, I celebrated what felt like a huge milestone: graduating from drug court. I thought I had it all figured out, but by April, I was back out. Then by November, I was in detox.
When I got out, I was completely empty-handed. I was picking up the pieces of an ugly separation, and I knew I couldn’t stay at my old rental - I had nowhere safe to go. That’s when my close friend, Ben Owen, stood in my living room and suggested I go to REBOS.
I’ll never forget the night I arrived. It was cold, dark, and raining heavily, matching exactly how I felt on the inside. But the moment I stepped through the door, I wasn't judged. I was welcomed with pure empathy and gentleness. That old house on Tutwiler had more than just a warm bed. REBOS gave me a safe, peaceful refuge to pause, breathe, and find my footing when my life felt like it was in pieces.
That safe environment allowed me to completely rebuild my life from the ground up. I am forever grateful for REBOS and the incredible women there who walked alongside me - some of whom I remain close friends to this day.
Since leaving REBOS, my life has transformed in ways I couldn't have imagined on that rainy November night. My husband and I moved in together, we welcomed a baby, and we now have all our children under one roof. Driven by my journey, I became a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist in Tennessee and now work at The Gambling Clinic at the University of Memphis, helping others navigate their own paths to healing.
I would have never believed this life was possible for me the night I walked into REBOS, but here I am. Thank you REBOS, for giving me the space to start over. And to anyone reading this who might have relapsed: it is okay. Don't stay out there - just come back and kick ass. 💕

I will forever be grateful for Rebos Women’s Recovery House and the role it played in my life. Rebos didn’t just give me a place to live—they gave me a safe place to learn how to live life sober and navigate the world again.

They supported me in ways I will never forget. They helped me get a car, helped me financially with a semester of college, and encouraged me to keep moving forward when I was rebuilding my life. Rebos gave me the structure, support, accountability, and confidence I needed to become the woman I am today.

While living there, I also met my fiancé. Although relationships were against the rules, Rebos continued to show me love and support while also maintaining the boundaries of their program. Even when I had to leave the house because of those rules, they remained present and supportive instead of turning their backs on me.

Rebos was a part of my foundation. They helped me understand that sobriety wasn’t just about staying sober—it was about learning how to live, grow, dream, work, go to school, build relationships, and become a productive member of society.

Thank you, Rebos, for believing in me, investing in me, and giving me a chance to rebuild. I will always carry the lessons, love, and support I received there with me. ❤️
