Training the next generation of neurosurgeons is a core part of our mission.

Dr. Paul Park recently served as a visiting professor for grand rounds at UCLA, where he spent time teaching and sharing his experience with residents and faculty.

Grand rounds bring physicians together to learn from real cases and from one another.

Not all headaches are the same.

A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak can cause:
• Headaches that worsen when upright
• Relief when lying flat
• Ear fullness or ringing
• Vision changes

Because these symptoms overlap with more common conditions, CSF leaks are often misdiagnosed.

If something feels off, trust your instinct and ask questions. Read more: https://www.semmes-murphey.com/news/hayleys-story

We were proud to welcome 10 local high school students to Semmes Murphey for our first-ever NextGen Neuro High School Shadow Day.

Students from three Memphis public high schools spent the day shadowing physicians, advanced practice providers, and physical therapists to experience the realities of healthcare careers within our specialty.

Through hands-on observation and conversations with providers, students gained insight into the education, resilience, and collaboration required to pursue a future in medicine.

Interested in participating in a future shadow day? Be on the lookout this fall for announcements and application information for upcoming NextGen Neuro opportunities.

We were proud to participate in the DeSoto Chamber Quarterly Luncheon, where Dr. Inoa and Dr. Kumar presented “Let’s Talk About Stroke” to community leaders and attendees.

They shared the warning signs and symptoms of stroke, treatment options, and why every second matters when stroke strikes. The discussion also highlighted the growing partnership between Baptist DeSoto and Semmes Murphey as they continue advancing stroke care in our region.

One of the most impactful moments came from a patient in attendance who shared her own stroke story. After recognizing the signs and calling 911, she received imaging and treatment at Baptist DeSoto within minutes and was back home just 48 hours later. Stories like hers are a powerful reminder that fast action saves lives.

We’re honored to help bring stroke education and advanced neurological care to the Mid-South and the heart of the Stroke Belt.

A TIA is not "just a mini stroke." It is a warning.

A transient ischemic attack, or TIA, produces stroke-like symptoms that resolve on their own, usually within minutes to hours. A TIA is one of the strongest predictors of a full stroke in the days and weeks that follow.

Symptoms of a TIA look exactly like stroke symptoms:
- Sudden weakness or numbness on one side
- Slurred or confused speech
- Vision loss or double vision
- Severe headache

If symptoms resolve, many people assume they are fine and do not seek care. That is one of the most dangerous decisions they can make.

If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, even briefly, go to the emergency room immediately.

As bone density decreases, the vertebrae become more vulnerable to compression fractures. These can happen suddenly, sometimes without a clear injury, and often lead to back pain, height loss, and changes in posture over time.

The earlier osteoporosis is identified, the more options you have to protect your spine and prevent fractures.

At Semmes Murphey, bone health is part of a thorough spine evaluation. When appropriate, we assess for osteoporosis and coordinate bone density testing as part of your care.

If you’re experiencing back pain or have concerns about your spine, we can help evaluate the cause and guide next steps.

05/19/2026

A fracture from osteoporosis can happen from something as simple as a sneeze. That is how fragile bones can become when the condition goes undetected.

Rachel Bates, PA-C, specializes in osteoporosis care at our Bartlett, Arlington, and Humphreys locations. She provides expert evaluation, treatment, and monitoring to patients across the Memphis metro.

“You may already have osteoporosis and not even realize it."

If you or a loved one has been told you are at risk for osteoporosis, or if you have had an unexplained fracture, ask your doctor about a bone density evaluation.
