πŸ”” Ringing, buzzing, or humming that won't quit? You're not making it up. And you're not alone.

Tinnitus affects roughly 15% of U.S. adults, about 50 million people. For some it's background noise. For others it seriously affects sleep, focus, and quality of life.

A few things most people don't know:

πŸ‘‚ Tinnitus is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It's usually a signal that something else is going on with your hearing or your health.

πŸ“‰ It's often linked to hearing loss. When your ears stop picking up certain frequencies, the brain can "fill in" with phantom sound. Treating the hearing loss often reduces how noticeable tinnitus feels.

🎧 Many modern hearing aids include tinnitus masking programs that generate soft background sounds to make the ringing less noticeable.

The old advice was "just live with it." That's outdated. If tinnitus has been wearing on you, come in for an evaluation. We'll help you understand what's happening and walk through your options.

πŸ” Today is Evaluate Your Life Day. Yes, that's a real holiday.

We're not going to tell you to evaluate your career, your relationships, or your life goals. That's on you.

We ARE going to ask you to evaluate ONE thing:

When was the last time you had your hearing checked?

If you can't remember β€” that's your answer.

Quick self-eval questions:
πŸ€” Do you turn the TV louder than others prefer?
πŸ€” Do you avoid restaurants and noisy gatherings more than you used to?
πŸ€” Do you catch yourself asking "what?" often?
πŸ€” Do you struggle on phone calls?
πŸ€” Do family members mention your hearing?

Yes to two or more? Worth getting checked.
Yes to three or more? Definitely worth getting checked.

Evaluation is complimentary. Takes under an hour. Zero pressure.

The most misunderstood thing about hearing aids: the day you get them is not the day they start working best.

Here's what almost nobody tells you before you buy hearing aids online, from a big-box store, or through a mail-order program: The fitting itself is maybe 25% of the work. The other 75% happens over the weeks and months that follow.

Your brain has to relearn how to hear.
After years of hearing less, sounds like refrigerator hums, footsteps on tile, and paper rustling suddenly return. It can feel overwhelming at first. Your brain needs time to sort what's important from what's background noise, and that process needs guidance.

Programming needs adjustments.
The settings that feel right during week one often need tweaking by week three. Then again later on. These small adjustments add up to a very different real-world experience.

Your life changes. So should your hearing aids.
A quiet office in the morning. A loud restaurant at lunch. Grandkids at dinner. Your hearing aids should be tuned for the way YOU actually live, and that requires an ongoing relationship with a hearing provider.

At American Hearing + Audiology, ongoing care is included with the hearing aids we fit. Adjustments, cleanings, checks, and support are all part of the package for the life of your devices.

πŸ“¦ "Should I just buy an over-the-counter hearing aid online?"

We get this question a lot since the FDA opened OTC sales in 2022. So let's talk honestly.

What OTC hearing aids CAN be good for:
βœ… Mild hearing loss β€” that's specifically what the FDA approved them for
βœ… Adults who've already had a professional hearing test and know their needs
βœ… Budget-conscious buyers who understand what they're getting
βœ… Tech-savvy users comfortable programming devices themselves

What OTC hearing aids CAN'T do:
❌ Diagnose why you have hearing loss (could be wax, infection, something more serious)
❌ Handle moderate-to-severe hearing loss
❌ Come with professional adjustment, follow-up, or ongoing care
❌ Detect asymmetric hearing loss (which sometimes signals medical issues)

The most common mistake we see: people spend $500–$1,500 on OTC devices, get frustrated because they don't sound right, and give up on hearing help entirely. The actual problem was usually that the devices weren't programmed for their specific hearing loss.

Our take: get a professional hearing evaluation FIRST. Then make an informed decision. We won't push you into anything you don't need.

πŸ›‘οΈ October is also National Protect Your Hearing Month.

Here's what most people don't realize: hearing damage doesn't just come from loud events. It comes from repeated moderate exposures β€” the ones you barely notice.

The stuff quietly damaging most people's hearing:
🎧 Earbuds at 70%+ volume for hours daily
πŸš— Highway driving with windows down (85+ dB sustained)
πŸ”§ Weekend projects β€” drills, saws, w**d whackers
🎢 "Background music" at your favorite restaurant
πŸ‹οΈ Gym playlists cranked past 90 dB
🏈 Youth sports events (crowds get loud fast)

None will damage you in one exposure. All of them, over years, will.

The fix isn't avoiding life. It's small habit changes:
βœ… 60/60 rule with earbuds β€” 60% volume, 60 minutes max
βœ… Ear protection for yard work and DIY
βœ… Custom-fit plugs if you're regularly in loud environments
βœ… A baseline hearing test so you can track changes

Prevention is way cheaper than treatment. Every time.

We make custom hearing protection at every location.

πŸŽ“ October is Audiology Awareness Month β€” a great excuse to talk about what actually happens behind the scenes at a hearing appointment.

Most people picture a hearing test as "put on the headphones, raise your hand when you hear the beep." That's about 20% of it. Here's what a comprehensive evaluation at a professional practice actually includes:

🩺 Case history & medical review
🩺 Otoscopy β€” visual exam of your ear canal and eardrum
🩺 Pure-tone audiometry
🩺 Speech testing
🩺 Tympanometry
🩺 A real conversation

That's the difference between a hearing screening and a hearing evaluation. And it's why walking into a professional audiology practice is different from an online hearing test or a big-box quick check.

Every American Hearing + Audiology location offers a full evaluation β€” no pressure, real answers.

πŸ“† Last day of September. Quick check-in.

Three-quarters of 2026 is officially in the rearview. Which means:

⏳ You've had about 275 days to schedule that hearing check you've been meaning to
πŸ“† You have 92 days left in the year to use your insurance benefits before they reset
🎯 October, November, and December get progressively busier β€” the sooner you book, the more scheduling options you have

We're not here to guilt-trip. We're here because we know how these things go: it's not that people don't care about their hearing. It's just never urgent until it is.

Here's the easy version:

πŸ“ž Book online at americanhearing.us β€” takes 60 seconds
πŸ“ž Or call any location and we'll find a time that works

The hearing screening itself is complimentary and takes under an hour. Whatever you decide to do after that is entirely up to you β€” zero pressure, ever.

The last quarter of the year is the best quarter to knock this off the list. πŸ’™

⏰ Q4 alert: your hearing benefits probably expire December 31.

Most people don't realize what they're leaving on the table.

If you have any of the following, you likely have a hearing aid benefit you haven't used this year:

πŸ’³ Medicare Advantage plan β€” most now include hearing aid coverage
πŸ’³ UnitedHealthcare Hearing β€” hearing exams and aid coverage
πŸ’³ TruHearing or NationsHearing β€” bundled into many major plans
πŸ’³ VA benefits β€” full coverage for eligible veterans
πŸ’³ FSA or HSA account β€” hearing aids qualify

Here's the catch: whatever you're entitled to now, you lose in January. These benefits reset annually, and unused coverage doesn't roll over.

We verify your specific benefits for free, no obligation. Just a straight answer on what you're eligible for and how to use it before it disappears.

Three months isn't much. If you've been considering hearing aids or overdue for an screening β€” now's the smart time.

🍁 First day of fall. Also: peak "when's the last time I did that?" season.

Something about the change in weather makes people take stock. The garage gets organized. The gutters get cleaned. The winter clothes come out of storage.

While you're going through the annual list β€” add this one:

πŸ“‹ When was the last time you had your hearing checked?

If the honest answer is "I actually can't remember" or "I never have" β€” you're in good company. Hearing screenings are the single most underscreened part of adult healthcare in America. Most adults have never had one, even though roughly 1 in 3 people over 65 has measurable hearing loss.

The screening itself:
βœ… Painless
βœ… Non-invasive
βœ… Under an hour
βœ… Complimentary at every American Hearing + Audiology location

Nothing about it is a big deal. But it's the kind of easy fall-cleanup task that pays off for years.

πŸ’œ Today is World Alzheimer's Day. And there's a link to hearing loss most people don't know about.

Research over the last decade has consistently shown a strong connection between untreated hearing loss and increased risk of cognitive decline, including dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

The current understanding is that untreated hearing loss contributes to cognitive decline in several ways:

🧠 Cognitive load β€” your brain works overtime to fill in missing sound, leaving fewer resources for memory and thinking
🧠 Social isolation β€” hearing loss quietly leads people to withdraw, and isolation is one of the strongest predictors of cognitive decline
🧠 Brain changes β€” the auditory processing regions of the brain may atrophy when they stop receiving clear input

The most encouraging finding: research suggests that treating hearing loss with hearing aids may help reduce cognitive decline risk, particularly in people already at higher risk.

If you or a loved one has been putting off a hearing check, today's a meaningful day to prioritize it.
