Day 5: Kratom

Kratom is a plant-derived substance that has gained popularity in the United States over the past decade. Made from the leaves of a tree native to Southeast Asia, kratom is commonly sold as powders, capsules, or extracts in smoke shops, convenience stores, and online. Many people use kratom for its stimulant effects at lower doses or its opioid-like effects at higher doses.

While some individuals report using kratom for pain relief or to manage opioid withdrawal, it is not approved by the FDA for medical use, and its safety profile is still being studied. Kratom can cause side effects such as nausea, dizziness, constipation, and sedation, and regular use may lead to dependence and withdrawal symptoms.

While it was originally developed as an antidepressant in some countries, tianeptine is not approved for medical use in the U.S. Despite this, it is often sold in gas stations, convenience stores, and online as a dietary supplement or “nootropic.”

At high doses, tianeptine can act on opioid receptors, producing effects similar to opioids and increasing the risk of dependence, addiction, and withdrawal symptoms when use stops. Some products marketed under names like ZaZa, Tianna, or Neptune’s Fix have been linked to serious health concerns and poison control calls.

Day 3: Xylazine

Xylazine is an emerging substance increasingly found in the illicit drug supply across the United States. Originally developed as a veterinary sedative, it is now frequently mixed with opioids such as fentanyl, creating additional risks for people who use drugs.

Because xylazine is not an opioid, its effects are not reversed by naloxone alone. It can cause deep sedation, dangerously slowed breathing, low blood pressure, and has been linked to severe skin wounds with repeated exposure.
