It’s the week of Halloween! I love Halloween and always have but let’s be honest- it can be such an overstimulating time of year!
Think about:
-how many times your child has been asked what they are going to be?
-how many fall and Halloween themed activities they have been doing or going to
-the buzz and excitement in school and with decorations
-The Candy!
-Pumpkin picking
-Trunk or treats AND Trick or Treating
This can all be so incredibly fun and special for your child but it can also be completely overstimulating, overwhelming and the reality is that if it isn’t candy overload that will make them crash and burn it’s the adrenaline and anticipation and expectations that come with all of it.
If your child is: talking louder, moving faster, crying, yelling, talking back, or just generally not acting like themselves…
Give them a break. Lower the visual and auditory stimulation.
Even if they are older.
A quiet calm corner can look as simple as a sheet tacked or clipped onto a wall or a corner in the house.
You don’t need a foam pit or a tent or a swing. Just a sheet and some pillows.
Turn the lights down low, give them 1 or 2 fidgets, books, or coloring pages and let them zone for at least 10 minutes.
Try this if you have to go from the pumpkin patch to a Halloween party.
A sheet, low lights, no sound, and perhaps offer a hug.
Let me know how it goes! ⬇️
