What is periodontal disease? 🦷
Periodontal disease is the loss of the bone that surrounds and supports the teeth. It is caused by bacteria in the mouth that infect the gum tissue and bone surrounding the tooth.
When bacteria stay on the teeth long enough, they form a film called plaque, which eventually mineralizes and hardens into calculus, also known as tartar. Tartar can build up below the gum line, leading to bone loss and disease progression.
As the disease progresses, the gums can pull away from the teeth, the supporting bone around the teeth can recede and be lost, and the teeth may loosen or even fall out.
Periodontal disease is more treatable when it is diagnosed at early stages, before symptoms arise. We take periodontal
disease seriously and screen for it at every dental cleaning appointment.
