We are ready for the Minnesota Genealogical Society NorthStar Conference on Halloween weekend, October 30-31 in Mendota Heights, MN, with a breakout presentation titled, "Potions & Paranormal: Folklore and Family History." While facts and dates are the "bones" of genealogy, the "delight" of family history is found in the culture our ancestors carried with them. This session will explore the intersection of Old World traditions and new World realities, using Romanian-American immigrant experiences as a case study, and offers a practical guide to adding cultural depth and color to your family tree, no matter where your ancestors came from!

Hot off the press is the August 2026 issue of Romanian Roots Newsletter of the Romanian Interest Group of Minnesota Genealogical Society. Here are a few pages so that you can see what content is included. The newsletter is distributed to all members of MGS who express interest in participating in Romanian Interest Group (RIG) activities. This issue includes research tips as well as stories featuring research of Bibu and Irimescu immigrant ancestors in the U.S. and Canada. All back issues of Romanian Roots to 2012 are available to members on the website.

One of many resources I am using to prepare for a presentation at the 2026 MGS North Star Conference, titled "Potions & Paranormal: Folklore and Family History," is this phenomenal exhibit designed by Raluca Octav and presented by HORA in 2023-2024, "Between Superstition and God: Life in a Romanian Village." I remembered this video and thought it would be of interest to anyone who wants to learn about Romanian susperstitions and traditions. My October presentation will discuss ways to research origins of folklore and traditions in order to learn more about our ancestors' lives, no matter where they came from.
