Maintaining and building strength is one of the most important investments we can make in healthy aging. Muscle mass and strength tend to decline over time, especially as we get older, but this is not something we simply have to accept.
Resistance training can help preserve or build muscle, improve strength and physical function, support bone health, and improve sensitivity and blood-glucose control. When combined with balance-focused activity, regular exercise can also help reduce fall risk.
Muscle is metabolically active: working muscles take up glucose from the bloodstream. Building and using muscle regularly can help the body use insulin more effectively and support healthier blood-sugar management.
The benefits go beyond the gym. Regular physical activity is associated with better brain health and lower risk of several chronic diseases, including dementia and many cancers. The goal is not simply to look fitโit is to stay strong, capable, independent, and metabolically healthy as we age.
