The UW-Stout Waterski Team is making waves on Lake Menomin and helping share an important message. Our lake needs care, and research from Dr. Nicole Hayes at UW Stout shows why.
Years ago, the lake had chlorophyll levels about three times higher than the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s goal for healthy water. This helps explain the bright green summer blooms we still see today.
Dr. Nicole Haye's 2025 data shows us that the problem is not gone. In late August, some spots on Lake Menomin had microcystin levels higher than the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s safety guideline. This tells us the lake can still struggle, especially during hot weather.
Here is the exciting part. We can help the lake improve. Simple actions like picking up trash, keeping storm drains clear and learning how summer heat affects water quality really make a difference.
When everyone helps, Lake Menomin becomes cleaner and safer for swimming, tubing, skiing and fishing.

Let’s team up and keep Lake Menomin shining. 💙🌊
