Dr. Harold J. Bowersox

Dr. Harold J. Bowersox Dr. Bowersox practices Functional Medicine and Homeopathy and specializes in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue. His wife, Karen, keeps him organized! Harold J.
(1)

He retired from primary care and now limits his practice to the above services. Bowersox, DO, MBA, MS, JD, CHCQM, HMD
I have been a physician for over 56 years and I have been studying homeopathy for over 30 years. I have successfully treated over 1000 patients for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue and ultimately wrote a book called "The Bowersox Protocol for Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue." It i

s written in very simple language so women who suffer from fibro fog will have no trouble understanding it. It explains their symptoms and their search for a treatment and explains my protocol so they know exactly what is involved. I am trained in Family Practice but really love treating people without drugs and watching their successful recoveries. I also practice Functional Medicine and find helping people make certain lifestyle changes to improve the quality of their life is very important. Patients want to talk with their doctor for more than ten minutes, and doctors need to hear what the patients have to say, so spending time with each patient and listening to their issues is an important part of their treatment and recovery.

I haven't posted an article in a while. Here's one on chronic pain:

Real Causes
Nutritional Deficiencies such as B Vitamins or Magnesium
Poor sleep-Tissue repairs during sleep
Ribose-Shortens muscles causing chronic pain
Inactivity-Muscle stretching helps release pain
Prescription medications-such as statins can be a common cause of muscle pain
Hormonal Imbalances-low levels of T3, adrenal, estrogen, progesterone
Chronic Inflammation – underlying force behind pain

Pain Management
Muscle pain – most common cause of pain – due to low energy in the muscles.
Address real causes of pain, if the causes of pain are addressed, you can lower muscle pain by at least 50%.
Pain caused by decreased energy in muscles – get good sleep, balance hormones, regulate immune system and
minimize inflammation, optimize nutrition and exercise. All this helps to stretch muscles which is required.

Arthritis – natural therapies can be as effective as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meds for pain relief. For example,
Curumin from Terry Naturally may be as effective as Celebrex (NSaidS) for both osteoarthritis and
rheumatoid arthritis. Glucosamine and chondroitin may be as effective as NSaids. Curumin 1-2 capsules 3 times a day. Be-Mobile – 2 caps twice a day. These are a few examples.
Control sensitization – causes more sinisterness to pain and a lower threshold for pain – affecting the central nervous system.
Low Dose Naltrexone – is an effective treatment for central pain (brain and spinal cord). Take 1 capsule daily at bedtime for a prolong time. It takes a couple of months to get effective results

To help eliminate pain (chronic) best to use nutrients, herbs and medications – Structural therapies, chiropractic, osteopathy, myofascial release, physical therapy, weight loss, TENS unit and magnets.

This is Karen and I just have to share this review from a recent patient. It may help someone else who suffers from similar problems.
I have been living with fibromyalgia for over 32 years, and know my limits and have managed it. But for the past 2 years I have been completely miserable. 2025 was the worst it has ever been and everything that used to work doesn't. The worst of it is the migraines (the type that used to plague me in the beginning of my diagnosis after a car accident).
🙏🏻 I had my first visit with Dr. Bowersox yesterday, and I was so nervous. But he is such an amazingly patient person with a great gift for listening (even dealing with my ADHD lol), that I eventually relaxed. At the end of that first visit, and a little work started on my body, I felt some relief and gained a range of motion in my neck and shoulders that I thought I'd never get back. The initial relief left me speechless and in full blown tears (I'm not a crier, and never once have I experienced such emotion in a doctor's office).
I went into the appointment with trepidation, but left with a high level of joy (a true pep in my step)!
I cannot thank you enough, Dr. Bowersox, for appearing in my life in 2025 (through my work with Karen). Our paths crossed - and I do not believe in irony. It was a year for me that was plagued with pain that I didn't want to relive.
Thank you for giving me hope, and real solutions to problems that were destroying my quality of life and ability to work comfortably. I can't wait to go back for my next appointment.

TOXICITY IN CLOTHING MATERIALS TO AVOID
Acrylic, as well as modacrylic or, well-known as wash and wear fabrics, served as a substitute for wool. Acrylics are highly inflammable and must be sprayed with toxic flame retardants to guard against the chance of burning. Studies have shown damage to the reproductive system and carcinogenic in lab animals.
Rayon or Viscose – a plant-based fabric, undergoes chemical processing with carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide, which is harmful to people.
Nylon – an alternative to silk, is sourced from toluene. It is made from petrochemicals that emit powerful greenhouse gases. In processing nylon, carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide are used in the process.
Acetate – having an adverse impact on health due to being processed with acetic acid, acetic anhydride and acetone which causes neurological issues, nausea and skin irritation.
Polyester – a synthetic fiber derived from petroleum and often treated with chemicals such as polyethylene glycol and antimony. These chemicals sometimes cause infertility. Due to trapping body heat, it could increase the absorption of toxic chemicals in the fabric.
Avoid fabrics with additional harmful chemicals. Make sure you wash these clothes before wearing them to lower exposure. Good alternatives to toxic clothes materials are cotton, wool, linen, H**p and silk. Look for certified organic natural fibers

DENTAL CAVITIES
Dental cavities and gum disease (gingival) can cause neurological damage. The combination of gum disease and cavities can dramatically increase one’s risk of strokes due to ischemia and significant damage to the brain. The same risk can also cause major adverse attacks to the cardiovascular system – such as heart attacks. People who have both cavities and gum disease have an increased risk of clot formation resulting in thrombotic stroke to the brain and the coronary arteries.
Disease of the gums and teeth are known as periodontal disease and can cause chronic systemic inflammation throughout the body. The inflammatory agents circulate through the blood stream and can directly contribute to arterial damage. When a person has infected gums or decayed teeth, bacteria can get into the circulatory system and cause seeding to arteries and organs.
Oral Hygiene is very important to your healthcare due to the mouth being the open gate to the rest of the body. In the life quest for living a long life and cognitive health, the simple acts of daily oral hygiene and visiting your dentist regularly, is a very powerful act of self-preservation.

What do you know about headaches?
PAIN IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD MAY BE DUE TO NECK ISSUES – WHICH CAN CAUSE AND INTENSIFY MIGRAINES.
The occipital headache (or back of the head headache) can radiate from the neck and can be felt in the head. The under-lying trigger of the occipital headache can be from the neck making the neck connection. Tension or migraine headaches may concentrate pain to the back of the head, but the trigger is often located in the neck.
There are three types of headaches that, due to neck injuries or neck problems, radiate to the back of the head.
1. Occipital neuralgia – is due to a pinched nerve in the upper neck originating at the base of the skull. The pain may radiate to the top of the head or towards the area behind one or both ears. The pain typically produces rapid pinching or shooting, stabbing pains lasting only a second at a time. These may have been caused by a sports injury, whiplash injury or years of poor posture – such as computer neck
2. Cervicogenic headaches – These headaches may be caused by disc disease of the cervical spine, vertebrae fractures, arthritis or neck injuries. These headaches radiate from the back of the head towards the frontal area of the scalp. Neck movements or stimulation of the involved area can cause stabbing pains.
3. Migrainous cervicalgia – There is neck pain that occurs when there is a migraine headache present. Migraines cause sensory amplification when stimuli to eyes or ears are perceived as uncomfortable or even painful episodes. Treatments such as chiropractic, massage or acupuncture do not help.

Well, I've been working on some new articles.
HEALTH RISKS DUE TO SYNTHETIC DYES AND ADDITIVES OR INGREDIENTS.
There are more U.S. Food and Drug (FDA) bans now being made and planned soon to disallow these ingredients in packaging: dyes, such as red dye 3, yellow 5 or Sodium benzoate. The reason for the new regulations in the use of dyes and additives is that they are of no benefit and can be detrimental to one’s health.
Large scale, peer reviewed studies show that synthetic food additives can cause a range of health risks. A published study revealed exposure to artificial preservatives, colorants and flavor enhancers are associated with increased risks for major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer and other conditions such as respiratory issues causing systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation as well as type 2 diabetes.
Recently the FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services announced a plan to phase our synthetic, petroleum-based food dyes from revocation of two dyes (citrus red 2 and orange B) and working with the industry to eliminate six more (FD & C green 3, red 40, yellow 5, yellow 6, blue 1 and blue 2) by the end of 2026.
Good choices would be to limit purchasing food that comes out of a package. The best food for one’s health is whole food by shopping at the perimeter of the grocery store. Read the ingredient lists to look for ultra processing of unfamiliar products. Keep your diet focused on whole foods, fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins and good fats, such as the mediterranean diet.

What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is a dynamic approach to assessing, preventing and treating complex chronic diseases.
Functional Medicine practitioners identify and treat complex chronic diseases. Identification and ameliorating dysfunctions in the physiology and biochemistry of the human body is a primary method to improve a patient’s health.
Functional Medicine returns function in one or more of the body’s physiologic organizing systems. Returning patients to health requires reversing or getting substantial improvements in the specific dysfunctions contributing to the disease state. Those dysfunctions are the result of lifelong interactions among our environment, our lifestyle choices and our genetic predispositions.
To manage the complexity inherent in this approach is obtaining and evaluating clinical information leading to individualized patient-centered therapies, such as lifestyle changes.
Today’s medical establishment has not produced an efficient method for identifying and assessing changes in basic physiologic processes that produce symptoms of increasing duration, intensity, and frequency. Such alterations in function often represent the first sign of conditions that, in later states, become pathophysiologically definable diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, depression, arthritis, and heart disease – all caused by underlying body inflammation.
Broadening the concept of functional processes to encompass this view of Functional Medicine becomes the science and art of detecting and reversing alterations in body function that clearly move a patient toward chronic disease throughout a lifetime.

Sorry, I haven't put up an article in a while. Here's one on osteoarthritis (OA).

Osteoarthritis (OA) or degenerative joint disease is by far the most common form of arthritis. Men and women are equally affected but symptoms tend to occur earlier and more severe in women.
The weight-bearing joints are joints of the legs and arms as well as the spinal joints are affected by the degenerative changes associated with OA. The main manifestations are pain, deformity and limitation of joint motion. Inflammation is usually at a minimum.
There are two categories of OA, primary and secondary. In primary OA – “wear and tear” process occurs mainly after the fifth and sixth decades with no apparent predisposing abnormalities.
Secondary OA is associated with predisposing factors responsible for the degenerative changes. Factors such as trauma, obesity, injuries, fractures along joint surfaces, crystal deposition and previous inflammatory disease of the joint, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout or septic arthritis.
An interesting clinical feature of OA is little lack of correlation between the severity seen in x-ray and the degree of pain. Conversely, there are cases with tremendous deformity but little if any pain.
Diagnosis is altered or subtle. Morning stiffness is often the first symptom. As the OA progresses, there is pain on motion, worsened with activity and relieved by rest. There is usually little obvious signs of inflammation. There are natural medicine treatments and non-medical approaches for the pain of OA.
