We are excited to officially welcome Dr. Kierstin Shahtout to the McRae Dental family this month!

Dr. K is a skilled and compassionate dentist who is dedicated to providing exceptional, patient-centered care. She earned her DDS from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and went on to complete a General Practice Residency at the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System. During her residency, she received advanced training in comprehensive dentistry, oral surgery, and implant dentistry, allowing her to provide a wide range of high-quality care to her patients.

And for those who may be wondering—yes, Dr. K offers IV sedation just like Dr. McRae! Whether you’re nervous about treatment or undergoing a more involved procedure, you can feel confident knowing you’re in experienced and caring hands.

Outside of the office, Dr. K enjoys spending time with her husband, Justin, hiking, and getting lost in a good book.

We are beyond thrilled to have Dr. K join our team and help continue our mission of providing our patients with nothing short of the very best care. 💙🦷 Staff Spotlight: Marjorie 🦷💙

It is with both gratitude and heavy hearts that we share that our wonderful hygienist, Marjorie, will be leaving McRae Dental in July as her family relocates for her husband’s military service.

While we are incredibly sad to see her go, we are so thankful for the many years she has dedicated to our patients, our team, and our office. Marjorie has been so much more than an exceptional hygienist—she has been a friend, a teammate, and a bright light in our practice every single day.

Her clinical skills are outstanding, and she consistently provides thorough, compassionate care while helping patients feel comfortable and cared for. She has a gift for building relationships, calming anxieties, and making everyone feel welcome the moment they sit in her chair. Whether she’s educating patients, helping a teammate, or stepping in wherever she’s needed, Marjorie always goes above and beyond.

When should you replace your toothbrush? 🪥🦷

A good rule of thumb: every 3 months — or sooner if the bristles start looking frayed.

Worn out bristles don’t clean your teeth as effectively and can be harder on your gums. If your toothbrush looks like it’s been through a battle… it’s probably time 😅

You should also replace your toothbrush:
✔️ After being sick
✔️ If the bristles are bent or flattened
✔️ After dropping it somewhere questionable 👀

And yes… your hygienist CAN tell when it’s been way too long 😂

Titanium vs. Zirconia implants — which is better? 🦷

At McRae Dental, we believe treatment should be customized to the patient — not based on trends.

Titanium implants have decades of research behind them and continue to be the gold standard for most implant cases due to their:
✔️ Long-term success rates
✔️ Strength and durability
✔️ Excellent bone integration
✔️ Predictable healing and stability

This is why titanium is our preferred implant material in the majority of cases.

However, zirconia implants can still be a great option in certain situations. Some patients prefer a metal-free restoration, have specific esthetic concerns, or may benefit from zirconia depending on tissue type and case selection.

The most important part of implant dentistry isn’t just the material — it’s proper diagnosis, planning, bone support, airway considerations, and long-term function.

That’s why we use advanced CT imaging and personalized treatment planning to determine what’s best for each individual patient. 🤍
