During transfusion, veterinary teams monitor temperature, pulse, respiration, PCV/TS, and other patient responses before, during, after, and for hours following treatment.

Every donor dog in our program helps local veterinary teams prepare for the unexpected and gives another dog the chance to recover, heal, and return home to the people who love them.

Canine Blood Heroes Boise is available to speak to veterinary teams, community groups, and organizations throughout the Treasure Valley.

For veterinary clinics, Chelsea can provide educational sessions focused on the clinical side of canine blood donation, including donor selection, collection procedures, blood products, transfusion protocols, and building a local donor network to support patient care.

For civic clubs, service organizations, and dog-loving groups, Chelsea shares the story behind canine blood donation, how transfusions save lives, and why donor dogs make such a meaningful impact on families facing medical emergencies with their pets.

Our mission is simple: build a network of healthy canine donors that helps local clinics provide hope and second chances for dogs in need.

What actually happens when a dog donates blood? 🩸🐾

The process is designed to be simple, safe, and supportive from start to finish.

- Before the appointment, your dog can follow their normal routine, with plenty of fresh water available. Please do not feed 2 hours prior to donation

- When you arrive, we focus first on helping your dog feel comfortable and secure, using "Fear Free" handling techniques to recognize and reduce any signs of stress.

- We perform an exam to ensure they are healthy prior to donation. We shave a small area and use a surgical scrub to prep the area for sterility. No sedation is used.

- During the blood draw, your dog rests comfortably while we collect approximately 450 mL of blood using state-of-the-art equipment. The full donation visit takes about 30 minutes, and your dog is closely monitored throughout.

- Afterward, we celebrate them like the hero they are — with love, praise, cookies, and a reunion with you.

- At home, they simply take it easy for the rest of the day and usually return to their normal routine the next day.

Healthy donor dogs may be able to donate again every 6–8 weeks.

“As the local owner and clinical director of Canine Blood Heroes Boise, I started this work to help make canine blood donation more accessible for our veterinary community,” says Chelsea Benjamin. “We are the Treasure Valley’s only locally owned, canine-dedicated blood bank. Our donors are healthy, loved family pets whose owners choose to help other dogs in moments of urgent need.”

Canine Blood Heroes Boise works alongside local veterinary teams to help with:

Could your dog be part of our hero lineup? ❤️

This cheerful crew shows a few of the breeds that often make great canine blood donor candidates — from gentle Golden Retrievers and noble Irish Wolfhounds to loyal Labradors, brave Boxers, sweet Pitbulls, steady Dobermans, spirited Airedales, and graceful Greyhounds.

Of course, every dog is evaluated as an individual. In general, potential donor dogs are:

Over 50 pounds
Healthy and between 1–7 years old
Current on vaccines
Comfortable with handling
Able to relax during a short donation visit

These whimsical pups represent something very real: local dogs helping local dogs when blood is needed for surgery, trauma, illness, or emergency care.
