The Florida Attorney General’s Office has charged two individuals accused of operating multiple unlicensed assisted living homes where elderly and disabled adults were allegedly exploited, abused, neglected, and financially victimized for years. This occurred over a period of years in Osceola County and Polk County but it serves as a reminder to all of us to stay alert, stay informed, and be involved in the lives of aging parents, grandparents, and loved ones.
According to investigators, victims were allegedly stripped of their independence, denied proper care, and had control of their Social Security benefits, medications, and personal belongings taken away.
Here are a few ways to help protect them:
✔️ Visit regularly and unexpectedly.
✔️ Make sure the facility is properly licensed.
✔️ Watch for unexplained injuries, weight loss, poor hygiene, or fearfulness.
✔️ Monitor bank accounts and benefit statements for unusual activity.
✔️ Ask questions if medications seem to be missing or medical appointments are being skipped.
✔️ Encourage your loved one to speak openly about how they are being treated.
If you suspect an elderly or disabled adult is being abused, neglected, or financially exploited, don't ignore the warning signs. Contact local law enforcement or the Florida Abuse Hotline immediately.
