Its true. When a Nonspeaker is finally able to truly and opening communicate- they are gaslit. Why is it so hard to believe that nonspeakers with apraxia actually have a motor disability and NOT a cognitive disability?
We continue to work to educate our community.

ASHA considers it unethical to provide S2C and we push firmly against this. When you have worked with nonspeakers who spell to communicate and finally see them break through their silence- there is no denying motor-based AAC training is effective.

We ask skeptics: between giving 26 letters for infinite communication OR giving minimum pictures to communicate basic needs- which of the two deprives a nonspeaker of access to true agency, creativity, and autonomy?

It is unethical to deprive someone of their true potential. To refuse to acknowledge that apraxia affects more than the oral structures is grossly negligible. Apraxia is a MOTOR Disability affecting ALL purposeful MOTOR outputs.

Assume cognitive competence in apraxic individuals. Give them the letterboards and motor coaching!

Owner and Speech Pathologist at Encore Speech & Wellness, Maija Hahn, has been speaking up for communication rights for nonspeakers for years. This weekend she presented to Florida providers and the public at the Healthcare Seminar & Roundtables event in The Villages where she presented: "Hidden In Plain Sight: APRAXIA".

She gave a powerful speech with the help of nonspeaker and spelling advocate, Gregory Tino (using Gregory's YouTube Video: My Letterboard Life: https://youtu.be/qEPi7OBti2c?si=CSL8CK1QhYOUQCyo).
