Wednesday Weekly Warm-up time with Sarah Miller MS, OTR/L and Brooklyn Benson, M.S. CCC-SLP

Let's practice getting in our owl brain by humming or singing.

Humming (especially down low!) is a great way to use sound you feel in your body to stimulate that big vagus nerve all the way from your head to your toes.

Music in general can be very regulating - so if humming feels too hard, try listening to music. You can sing along too!

It's that time of week again - this week's owl brain warm up focuses on using your 5 senses to reset your nervous system because it lets your brain focus on something else besides what might be creating big feelings for you in the moment.

5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.

A note from Ms. Sarah: "Sometimes doing all five can be overwhelming, so we might just start with one at a time and slow it down. I also try to be super descriptive (ex; I see a big blue water bottle, I feel the soft, cool pillow) to really focus on that sense."

Let's practice! Comment below with 1 of your senses you used today.

We'll go first!

Wednesday Weekly Warm-up time! For today, let's get jumping!

If you're local, it's been raining a LOT today and that can make our bodies feel really excited, but also a little cooped up, so hopefully moving big this week is helpful all around!

Jumping is a great way to feel your whole body. Big body movements teach our body it's safe and get our owl brains back on board! If you can jump to a rhythm or a beat, that can help even more so put on some music!

Happy jumping!

Time for that Wednesday weekly warm-up for our owl brains! πŸ¦‰ 🧠

This week, let's try a yoga pose-but make it fun!

Tree pose involves balancing on one leg, but feel free to keep your other leg closer to the ground if needed for balance. A chair to hold onto, or a buddy works too. Try to put your hands up like the leaves of the tree, and then shake your body like a tree trying to shake off the last of your dry fall leaves.

Then focus on breathing in and out. You might find you still sway a little without meaning to. Just go with it like a tree might bend in a breeze.

Grounding in this pose activates the vagus nerve (a big long nerve that runs all the way up and down most of your body) and activating this nerve helps calm a busy brain. 🧠

Drop a 🍁 below once you've given this a try, and tag an emotional regulation practice buddy below!

Hey there! It's time for our Wednesday "owl brain"weekly warm-up with and

This week's warm-up: Blowing out the candles!

Using our breath is one of the most effective ways to recalibrate our nervous systems. This strategy focuses on taking a big breath to blow out all the candles on a pretend birthday cake - using your five fingers as candles works great!

Miss Sarah likes to also offer this as an alternative to one big breath:

"Sometimes I slow that strategy down by doing one finger at a time (slower more controlled 5 breaths instead of one big one)."

So maybe pretend your cake has trick candles and you have to keep trying. 😏

Check in for today with a birthday πŸŽ‚ below - and tag a friend or three in the comments who might want to try this too!

Welcome to our Wednesday "owl brain" weekly warm-ups!

Miss Brookie and Miss Sarah are teaming up from and to share a weekly idea for what Miss Brookie refers to with her clients as owl brain warm-ups.

You can learn more in these graphics about this concept and how it can help you at home with your kiddos in every day life.

Using our owl brains is just another way we can focus on play as an area of therapy.

The last slide shows this week's weekly warm up! Drop a high-five below when you've given this a try!

This week's warm up? Get those legs up high - in the sky, against a wall - you pick! This somatic yoga pose is an incredible tool for regulating the nervous system.

Check back in with our page and for a new warm-up to try each Wednesday!
