Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is one of the most effective ways to correct vision, but few people know much about it. Here are five common myths and the facts behind them.
Myth #1: RLE is basically the same as LASIK.
Fact: They work in different ways. LASIK reshapes the cornea with a laser. RLE replaces your eye's natural lens with an artificial one. It uses the same lens types and techniques as cataract surgery, but it's done before a cataract forms.
Myth #2: You'll still need cataract surgery later.
Fact: IOL lenses don't develop cataracts. Once your natural lens is replaced, a cataract can't form in that eye.
Myth #3: You have to wait until cataracts cloud your vision.
Fact: RLE can be done before any cataract exists. It's often a good fit for presbyopia, high prescriptions, or farsightedness that isn't well suited to LASIK. Think of the years you can reclaim from bifocals and readers!
Myth #4: Recovery takes weeks.
Fact: Most patients are back to normal daily activities within a few days. You'll use eye drops for a few weeks, but your schedule usually doesn't have to stop for it.
Myth #5: Once it's done, the results can't be adjusted.
Fact: If a small prescription remains after healing, it can often be fine-tuned with a laser enhancement. Some advanced lenses, like the Light Adjustable Lens, are made to be adjusted after your eyes heal.
Every eye is different, so finding out if you're a candidate starts with a full evaluation.
