🎃 Dressing up can be exciting, but for some children, traditional costumes can make Halloween feel a little overwhelming. The unfamiliar textures, masks, accessories, and changes in routine can present challenges for children with sensory sensitivities.

To help you prepare, we’ve rounded up some simple, sensory-friendly costume ideas to help take the stress out of dressing up this Halloween!

One way to set your child up for success? Don’t wait until Halloween to try on what your child will wear. Even if you’re choosing a comfy clothing option, give your child a chance to try it on ahead of time!

Have you found a sensory-friendly costume option your child loves? Share your ideas below 👇🏻 to help other families!

Did you know that using scissors requires more than just hand strength?

Your child also needs to learn how to coordinate different movements at the same time, including keeping their thumb positioned upward, adjusting the paper as they cut, and using their eyes to guide their movements.

These skills develop gradually through everyday play and hands-on exploration! Simple activities like using a spray bottle, peeling stickers, and squeezing sponges can help build the strength, coordination, and motor control for successful cutting!

There are a few things we wish parents heard more often.
💙 Your child is learning through play, even when it just looks like fun.
💛 All progress counts, no matter how big or small.
🩵 When it comes to your child, your voice matters too!

Therapy isn’t something that happens to a family. It works best when we work with families! It’s important to our team to be with you to celebrate the wins, navigate the hard days, and we truly value learning from each other along the way.

If you’re looking for a therapy team to join you on your journey, we currently have immediate openings for in-clinic services at our Mesa and Surprise locations. Send us a message to get started! We’re happy to help!

Meet our Director of Therapy Services!

Since joining RISE Pediatric Therapies in 2020 as a Pediatric Physical Therapist, she has supported children and families across Arizona through AzEIP. Her passion for helping infants and young children learn, grow, and reach milestones through play continues to inspire her work every day.

With experience in the NICU, outpatient pediatrics, and early intervention, she has continued to expand her expertise, earning her Neonatal Touch and Massage Certification in 2024 and completing additional training in infant bodywork and sensory integration.

In November 2025, she stepped into her role as Director of Therapy Services for RISE Pediatric Therapies, where she now supports and mentors therapists across Arizona while continuing to work directly with children and families.

Dani, we are so grateful to have you leading our team! Thank you for all you do to support your teammates and the children and families we serve!

Functional communication is about more than learning new vocabulary! It’s about giving your child words they can use throughout their day.

The best words to practice are the words that are meaningful and useful for your child. Model these words naturally during play and your daily routines, without any pressure on your child to repeat them!

These words can make a big difference in communication!

What word would make the biggest difference for your child? Comment below!

“What’s this?” isn’t a bad question, but if you find yourself asking it over and over during play with your child, try this simple swap!

Instead of asking your child to tell you the word, give them the word!

Instead of: “What animal is that?”
Try: “Zebra! The zebra is running!”

Modeling takes away the pressure to give the “right” answer while giving your child lots of opportunities to hear language during play!

You don’t have to stop asking questions! Just balance asking questions with modeling and commenting during play!
