When you're a kid, you have no idea that the completely ordinary days will end up meaning the most.
For me, those memories were the summers I spent visiting Nana and PaJim in Colorado. I was their very first grandchild... and let’s be honest, obviously PaJim's favorite. 😉❤️🤣 (Jk)
One thing I’ll never forget is how he’d always take an extra moment to make sure I knew I was seen. He’d look me right in the eyes, wait for me to look back (which, if you know me, you know that's always been hard for me 😂), and tell me how proud he was of me and how much he loved me.
As the years went on, watching vascular dementia slowly change the man who used to see me so clearly was heartbreaking.💔
Last month, I made a trip to Kentucky. Even though the disease had taken his memory, and he couldn’t quite place who I was... the instinct to love me was still there. He looked right at me, past all the confusion, and told me he loved me.
That was the last time I saw him. Tonight, at 8:49 PM he passed away peacefully, surrounded by the people who loved him most. 🤍
Dementia took so much from him, but it never took away his ability to love.
I love you, PaJim. Thank you for every summer, every hug, every "I'm proud of you," and every "I love you."

It's been a while, so I wanted to give a little update on my PaJim. 💙

Last week, he officially came home so he could spend this next chapter surrounded by family. He's been having a much harder time lately, especially with eating and swallowing, so we've officially started hospice care...

It’s definitely not a road anyone wants to walk, but I’m just so relieved that my Nana and Uncle Kevin finally have some extra hands. The daily caregiving is still incredibly tough on them, but knowing they aren't doing it completely alone makes a world of difference.

Please send all the prayers, positive thoughts, good vibes (whatever you believe in) to my family as it's a difficult time. I know they will appreciate it so much.

Dementia has taken so much, but it will never, ever take away how much we love him. 💙

Some chapters are harder than others.

Distance means these visits with my PaJim (grandpa) don't happen nearly as often as I'd like, which makes every visit, every smile, and every memory that much more special. 💕

Even when he doesn't quite recognize me, the connection is still there. I know this time won't last forever, so I’m holding tight to every single second. 💙

So, the other night, I tried to power up my old iPhone to save voicemails from my dad and grandpa.
0% charge. 🔋🪫
While it was charging, the battery actually expanded and cracked the back of the phone open. 🤯 Thankfully, the tech gods were on my side for once and there was just enough power to save what I needed to a hard drive.
I got my dad’s voice back. I got my grandpa’s voice back. And now I know they are safe. I don’t even want to think about what I would’ve done if I hadn't been able to save them. Losing those forever wasn't an option. 💔❤️

Last Thursday I flew back to Kentucky, where my sibling, Kenna, and I met up & spent time with our family before the holidays. It was one of those trips you don’t realize you need until you’re in it.

I'm so grateful we got to spend time with everyone. Sadly, PaJim doesn’t just have Alzheimer’s anymore, he also has vascular dementia.

The first day we saw him, he was quiet. Distant. He had no idea who we were. That part sucked. By our last visit, he was talking more, and we caught a glimpse of his old personality shining through. He even guessed that I was either his daughter… or his granddaughter. I was honestly shocked!

Kenna and I created a collage of photos to hang in his room, all pictures of him with other loved ones. I asked if he recognized anyone. He said some looked familiar, but he wasn’t sure. I pointed to a photo of him and me from 2015 and, half joking, asked if he knew who that guy was. He said he didn’t. 😭 Later, I showed him a picture of us from when I was about five years old. He didn’t recognize us then either.

Dementia is brutal. It doesn’t just steal memories, it takes pieces of the person you love while they’re still here.

A positive is that he really lit up when he opened his Christmas present from us, a Hickory Farms Gift Set. He’s always loved that stuff! He kept looking at the box, talking about it and even cracking jokes. For a split second, it felt like he was himself again.

It’s heartbreaking to see that version of someone, but I’m thankful he’s safe and getting the care he needs. I’m also incredibly grateful for a career that allows me to be with my family when it matters, and for a boyfriend who holds down the fort with the pups while I’m gone. I know how lucky I am. 💛

I’m just getting home but I'll share some fun photos later!

Thankful for the yummy dinner & amazing company as I hosted Thanksgiving this year! 😁 We had the HoneyBaked ham, stuffing, green beans with garlic and bacon, all the usual chaos plus, I turned my family’s pecan pie recipe into a chocolate bourbon pecan pie… which was an absolute hit! 🥧

Somehow I also finished the entire back patio just in time the new lights, table, chairs, rug, cushions totally came together.

And yes… we all had a Dr Pepper for my dad, which turned into a full toast for everyone’s 💀 dead dads. 🤣

Hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving!🧡🍁
