Maria Evangelista – Featured Resident of the Month

Maria Evangelista was born in the Philippines and moved to the United States with her family when she was six years old. At the age of 14, she became a proud United States citizen.

After graduating from high school, Maria decided to join the U.S. Navy. Inspired by friends who were serving and motivated by a desire to see new places, she enlisted and began her military career in San Diego. She later spent four years stationed in Atsugi, Japan, where she worked in aviation administration. Her time in the Navy allowed her to experience new cultures and develop valuable professional skills.

Following her military service, Maria transitioned into civilian life and continued her career in administration. She first worked at a law firm and later moved into an accounting role in California. In 2015, she relocated to Arizona and joined HonorHealth, where she worked in an administrative position.

In 2019, Maria experienced a stroke and recovered at home. Unfortunately, she suffered a second stroke in 2020, creating new challenges in her life. Despite these setbacks, Maria has remained determined and resilient. She has never been married and does not have children, but she has built strong relationships and connections throughout her life.

Since arriving at Sandridge, Maria has made tremendous progress. When she first came to the facility, many daily tasks were difficult to complete independently. Through hard work, perseverance, and dedication to therapy, she has gained confidence and improved her abilities. She has learned to take steps, transfer more independently, propel her own wheelchair, and perform many activities that have increased her independence.

Today, Maria is a valued and active member of the Sandridge community. She participates in activities and programs, assists with operating the general store, enjoys community outings, and consistently brings positivity to those around her. She is always willing to lend a helping hand and contributes greatly to the community.

Looking ahead, Maria has ambitious goals for her future. She hopes to work in the hospitality industry, return to school, live independently, and eventually start her own business. Her determination, positive attitude, and commitment to personal growth continue to inspire everyone who has the privilege of knowing her.

Know Your Neighbor: 1st Episode

My name is Tom, and my journey has taken me from Buffalo, New York, to Arizona, where I moved in 2003 for a new opportunity. Along the way, I’ve been blessed with a wonderful family, including my daughter and son, and many meaningful experiences that have shaped who I am today.
I spent 2 years with the Army while stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and later worked as an assistant manager at Sam’s Club for five years. I also worked in construction as a warehouse supervisor for 12 years before retiring in 2015. One of my favorite memories from being in the service was the opportunity to travel all across the United States and meet so many different people and places.
What brings me the most joy is making other people happy. In my free time, I enjoy building Lego models and am currently working on a Batmobile project. I believe life is best enjoyed when you continue learning, creating, and sharing kindness with others.
