Youve probably heard it from me before but a word a lot in the treatment room: Excoriation. 🛑

In the skincare world, “excoriation” is just the technical, clinical term for picking!! And while it might feel like you’re “fixing” a breakout, you could be causing a lot of damage at the surface!!

When we look at a breakout under the magnifying lamp, we can see exactly what happens when you pick at a breakout:

💥 Increased Inflammation: Forcing a blemish open doesn’t clear it out; it actually pushes bacteria and debris deeper into the follicle. This triggers a massive inflammatory response, making the bump larger, redder, and much more painful.

🛡️ Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH/PIE): That dark mark or stubborn red spot left behind long after the pimple is gone? That’s your skin’s response to the trauma of excoriation. It takes months for these pigment marks to fade.

🧬 Risk of Permanent Scarring: True acne scars (like icepick or boxcar scars) happen when the skin’s underlying tissue structure is disrupted. Excoriation damages the collagen network, meaning the skin can’t heal flat, leaving behind permanent texture changes.
