Please use caution while driving eastbound on Highway 70 near Old Road and Sunset Loop, mile marker 242. An accident is currently blocking the area, and emergency vehicles are on scene.

Heavy rain is affecting road conditions this morning. Please slow down, turn on your low-beam headlights, increase your following distance, and turn off cruise control.

Never drive through standing or moving water—Turn Around, Don’t Drown. If your vehicle hydroplanes, ease off the accelerator, avoid sudden braking, and steer straight until you regain control. If visibility becomes poor, pull completely off the roadway in a safe location.

As rain moves into the area, the Mescalero Emergency Operations Center (EOC) would like to share important information with the community about flood safety and emergency preparedness. This risk of flooding is a reservation wide concern for the next couple of days. We should expect flooding in areas that haven’t had flooding in years. Please be on the look out for alerts posted to the tribe’s socials, and alerts sent to your phones from the Tularosa Basin Regional Dispatch Authority (TBRDA). The tribe is deploying flood monitors to patrol the areas of concern. If you are asked to leave your residence, please do so in a calm and safe manner. Please listen to and abide by the instructions given to you by emergency/tribal personnel.

Please stay alert, monitor weather updates, avoid flooded roads, and be prepared to evacuate if directed by officials. Share this message with your family, friends, and neighbors. Stay safe, Mescalero!

Attention Mescalero Apache Tribe community! Due to the active flood watch, we have set up a sandbag staging area to help residents prepare and protect their homes and property.

What to Know:

Location: Mescalero Empowerment Building

Hours: 8:00AM till 6:00PM or till gone

Materials: Sandbags will be available free of charge.

We encourage all residents to take advantage of this resource. Let’s work together to keep our community safe during this weather event.

We are excited to announce the results of the 2026 First Responder Cow Elk Hunt draw held today by the Conservation Department! As per the Tribal Hunt Proclamation, Ordinance 26-02, we’ve allotted 20 Cow Elk permits specifically for our dedicated First Responders in Otero and Lincoln County.

Due to ongoing water issues, all tribal departments located in the Community Center and Empowerment Building will be closing at noon today.

Additionally, the museum and MAHA warehouse will also close at noon.

We want to inform you that the Mescalero Tribal offices will be releasing staff today at 1 PM due to an unexpected water issue.

Details of the Situation:

Affected Areas: Water will be out from the old BIA agency down through Mescalero, similar to the previous shutdown.

Exceptions: Child care, Utilities, and Early Childhood staff are allowed to remain at work if they still have access to water since they operate on a separate line.

Tribal leadership did there best to coordinate with the utilities, but unfortunately, we cannot avoid this shutdown. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time.
