Patient Success is Our Success - From Garland, Texas, 70-year-old Edison Rector is retired and enjoys watching basketball. He is married with one son.

Recently, while at home, Edison fell and his family took him to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with a stroke. Following his initial care at an acute care hospital, Edison chose inpatient rehabilitation at Mesquite Rehabilitation Institute (MRI), where he had previously been a patient. MRI holds a national certification in stroke rehabilitation from The Joint Commission, demonstrating the hospital’s commitment to achieving better outcomes for stroke patients.

Upon arrival at MRI, Edison was bedridden. He worked closely with the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team and followed an individualized treatment plan that included physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

Physical therapy focused on helping Edison regain his strength and ability to walk. Occupational therapy helped him work on activities needed for daily living, such as eating independently. Speech therapy focused on helping him improve his ability to speak and communicate.

Patient Success is Our Success - Seventy-five-year-old Sylvia Adams is a retiree from Mesquite, Texas. She has two sons and nine grandchildren. When not spending time with her grandchildren, she enjoys shopping.

Recently, Sylvia woke up around 2 a.m. and went to wake her son, only to discover that he had passed away in his sleep. Paramedics arrived and evaluated Sylvia, including performing an EKG, before taking her to a hospital. She was later airlifted to a hospital in Dallas, where she was diagnosed with a stroke.

Following her initial treatment, Sylvia was referred to Mesquite Rehabilitation Institute (MRI) for continued rehabilitation. She had previously received care at MRI following an earlier stroke. MRI holds a national certification in stroke rehabilitation from The Joint Commission, demonstrating the hospital’s commitment to achieving better outcomes for stroke patients.

When Sylvia arrived at MRI, she was unable to walk without a walking device. She worked with the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team to develop a personalized rehabilitation plan. She participated in speech, physical, and occupational therapy. Physical therapy focused on improving her mobility and helping her walk more safely, while speech therapy addressed her speech and communication skills. Occupational therapy helped her work on the skills needed to perform everyday activities and become more independent.

For patients recovering from a disabling injury or illness at a medical rehabilitation hospital, medication management is an important part of coordinated care that supports recovery and independence so patients can transition home safely.

Pharmacists are key members of the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team, working alongside physicians, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that medications are appropriate, effective, and used safely.

As part of the care team, pharmacists may review medication orders for appropriate drug selection, dosage, potential interactions, allergies, and other safety considerations. Because medications can change during a hospital stay, pharmacists may also compare medication lists, identify discrepancies, and communicate necessary changes to the team. This process, known as medication reconciliation, is an important part of medication safety during transitions of care.

Pharmacists may also monitor patients’ responses to medications, identify potential adverse effects, and make informed medication decisions, which may include adjusting medication regimens to support participation in therapy sessions. As patients prepare for discharge, pharmacists can help explain medications so patients understand how to use them safely and effectively at home.

Patient Success is Our Success - From Garland, Texas, 82-year-old Rosalinda Fonseca enjoys cooking and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Recently, Rosalinda fell and fractured her femur, or thigh bone. After receiving initial treatment at an acute care hospital, her daughter recommended Mesquite Rehabilitation Institute (MRI) for inpatient rehabilitation and encouraged her to continue her recovery there.

When Rosalinda arrived at MRI, her goals were to regain her strength, improve her balance, and become more independent. She worked closely with the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team on a personalized rehabilitation plan that included physical and occupational therapy.

Physical therapy focused on improving Rosalinda’s strength, balance, and mobility so she could walk safely. Occupational therapy helped her practice daily activities and work toward greater independence.

“The therapy staff was so patient with the process,” Rosalinda says. “They helped me excel.”

After 14 days at MRI, Rosalinda was discharged home. She made progress toward her goals and can now walk with a walker. She is feeling energetic and looks forward to returning to the activities she enjoys, especially cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Patient Success is Our Success - Eighty-seven-year-old James Evans from Mesquite, Texas, enjoys fishing, watching NASCAR, and attending races.
Recently, James fell at home. After developing a fever and becoming weak, he went to an acute care hospital where he was diagnosed with cellulitis, or a bacterial infection, affecting both lower legs. Following his initial treatment, the hospital recommended Mesquite Rehabilitation Institute (MRI) for specialized rehabilitation.
Upon arrival at MRI, James worked closely with the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team, which developed an individualized treatment plan to improve his balance, walking, and ability to perform daily activities. His treatment included physical and occupational therapy. Physical therapy focused on improving his strength, walking, and balance, while occupational therapy focused on daily activities and independence.
After nearly three weeks at MRI, James is now able to walk and has improved his balance.
“The staff was professional and attentive throughout my care,” he says. “And the cafeteria food was great!”
James plans to continue his recovery through outpatient therapy at MRI.
