Born at just 24 weeks and weighing only 1 pound, 7 ounces, Kamren Sanders entered the world much earlier than expected. His journey began before birth at Lakeside Hospital, where his mom, Kevielle, received specialized care for a high-risk pregnancy. When her water broke prematurely, the Lakeside team worked to safely prolong her pregnancy, knowing that every additional day would give Kamren more time to develop.
After Kamren was born, Lakeside’s Level III NICU became home for the next chapter of his journey. There, neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists and other specialists provided around-the-clock care as his tiny lungs grew stronger and his family celebrated every milestone.
“The respiratory therapists, nurses, and doctors treated us like family,” Kevielle said. “There were days I walked in crying, and they literally wiped away my tears.”
When Kamren later needed specialized pediatric heart care, he was transferred within the LCMC Health system to Manning Family Children's, where surgery successfully closed a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). After 142 days of neonatal and pediatric care, Kamren finally went home.
Today, the former micro preemie is 4 years old and thriving. He loves Spider-Man, swimming, trips to the beach, playing with his older brothers — and surprising his family with hugs and “I love you.”
