Storms bring more than rain—they can also bring changes in routine, unfamiliar sounds, uncertainty, and big emotions for children. 🌀💛

For many children, especially those with sensory sensitivities or difficulty adapting to change, hurricane season can feel overwhelming. That’s why preparation goes beyond stocking up on supplies.

Helping children understand what to expect, supporting their sensory needs, practicing communication skills, and maintaining routines when possible can make a meaningful difference in how they experience stressful situations.

At TLC, we know that when children feel safe, supported, and regulated, they’re better able to navigate change and uncertainty.

You’ve probably heard of a sensory bin, but have you ever wondered why they are used in pediatric therapy?

These are a few of our top reasons at TLC:

🍁 They boost language development by giving children a concrete, hands-on reason to communicate, explore descriptive words, and build strong memory pathways in the brain while exploring the items in the bin.

🍁 They help develop fine motor skills by engaging the small muscles in children’s hands and fingers through gripping, scooping, and tool manipulation. This helps children develop grasp patterns needed for handwriting and managing feeding utensils.

🍁 They help with self regulation by providing calming, structured tactile input that soothes the nervous system and helps children manage overwhelming emotions.

🍁 They build social skills by learning patience, teamwork, and compromise as they share limited tools (like scoops and cups) or take turns finding hidden objects.

🍁 They help develop problem solving skills by presenting physical challenges that require trial, error, and adaptive thinking in a low-pressure environment.

🍁 And most importantly… they are FUN!
