When you think about sun protection, are you remembering your ears, eyelids, nose, and lips? ☀️

These areas of the face receive significant sun exposure, and when skin cancer develops in certain high-risk or sensitive locations, Mohs surgery may be recommended.

Preserving healthy tissue can be especially important around the eyes, nose, lips, and ears. Mohs micrographic surgery offers a precise approach to treating appropriate skin cancers in these areas.

Your sunscreen routine shouldn’t stop at your cheeks and forehead. Protect the often-forgotten spots, too. 🧴

One of the biggest advances in Mohs surgery over the past decade isn’t a new tool, it’s the evidence. 🔬

Dr. Cox discusses how a growing body of research has helped expand the conversation around Mohs micrographic surgery for select patients with cancers such as melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and certain rarer skin cancers.

As evidence continues to clarify which patients may benefit from Mohs surgery, it can help multidisciplinary care teams consider this specialized treatment when appropriate, giving more patients access to options that may improve outcomes.

The takeaway: for certain skin cancers, Mohs surgery deserves to be part of the treatment conversation.

Basal cell carcinoma is common, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored.

An estimated 3.6 million cases of basal cell carcinoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, highlighting the importance of skin cancer awareness, sun protection, and early detection.

BCC can sometimes appear as a sore that won’t heal, a spot that repeatedly bleeds, or another persistent change in the skin. Knowing your skin makes it easier to recognize when something deserves a closer look.

See something new, changing, or not healing? Make an appointment with a qualified Dermatologist to have it evaluated.

🔬 What are we looking for under the microscope during Mohs surgery?

One of the defining parts of Mohs micrographic surgery happens right here.
After a thin layer of tissue is removed, it is carefully processed, mapped, and examined under the microscope. The Mohs surgeon looks along the tissue margins for any remaining skin cancer cells.

If cancer cells are still present, the map helps guide the surgeon back to the precise area where additional tissue needs to be removed. This process is repeated until the examined margins are clear, helping remove the cancer while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

It’s a meticulous process, and an important reason Mohs surgery is used for certain skin cancers.

What happens after Mohs surgery leaves a larger or more complex facial defect?

In some cases, removing skin cancer is only the first step. Reconstructive surgery after Mohs may be needed to repair the surgical site while carefully considering nearby facial structures, function, and appearance.

These images offer a behind-the-scenes look at the surgical process, from the defect following skin cancer removal to reconstruction and the early stages of healing.

Every skin cancer and reconstruction is unique, and treatment plans are individualized to each patient.

You’ve heard of Mohs surgery, but what makes it different? 🔎

Mohs micrographic surgery is a highly specialized approach to skin cancer treatment that combines surgical removal with microscopic examination of the tissue. The goal? To thoroughly evaluate the surgical margins while conserving healthy tissue whenever possible.

For patients facing a skin cancer diagnosis, knowing what to expect can help make the treatment process feel more manageable. At The Skin Surgery Centre, education and individualized care are part of every step.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. While it often grows slowly, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important for protecting healthy surrounding tissue and achieving the best possible outcome.

Our focus is on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma, with an emphasis on specialized care and precision.

Know your skin. Watch for spots that are new, changing, bleeding, or not healing, and have concerning areas evaluated by a qualified medical professional.
