Natural Ways To Strengthen Your Thyroid
BY ANGELIQUE JOHNSON

Feeling drained, weak, or just plain used up? You could be missing some key nutrients that keep your thyroid from working properly.

The thyroid is the small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of your neck. It produces energy for all cells in the body and has an immeasurable effect on your health. It regulates your metabolism and, when not working properly, can contribute to a wide range of problems.

More than 20 million individuals in the United States have some form of thyroid disease. The most common issue is hypothyroidism, a condition where thyroid hormone levels are lower than they should be, causing a sluggish thyroid.

Unfortunately, thyroid problems are often misdiagnosed, because more often than not, standard medical tests aren’t enough to get a complete picture.

There are two kinds of thyroid hormones in the body: the inactive form (T4) and the active form (T3). The T4 hormone travels through the blood and into the cell where it becomes the active T3 form.

However, when there is a problem with the conversion from T4 to T3, your body begins to show symptoms. Our modern day tests only measure the amount of T4 that is in the blood and have no way of reporting if there is a conversion issue.

Some of the symptoms of low thyroid function include:

Fatigue or low energy
Brain fog
Cold hands and feet
Hair loss or thinning
Dry skin
Weight gain
Memory problems
Muscle weakness

Luckily, if you suspect a sluggish thyroid, there are some natural ways you can boost its function. Here are 5 of the most effective:

1. Iodine

Iodine in extremely important for the thyroid, but unfortunately, the nutrient is often lacking from our diets.

Aim for 200 mcg daily. Most multivitamins contain this amount, or, if you prefer eating natural sources, try green sea vegetables such as nori, shellfish, organic plain yogurt and eggs.

2. L-Tyrosine

This amino acid is an important building block for thyroid hormones. In fact, without L-tyrosine, T4 can’t be stimulated. L-tyrosine works together with iodine to promote healthy thyroid function.

Aim to get 300 mg daily by filling up on foods such as almonds, avocados, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds.

3. Selenium

In order for T4 to be converted into T3, an enzyme that contains selenium is necessary. A study published in the European Journal of Endocrinology found a direct relationship between low selenium in the body and thyroid tissue damage.

It is recommended to get 55 mcg of selenium per day, which can be achieved by eating two Brazil nuts.

4. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb popularly used in Ayurvedic medicine to lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and to balance thyroid hormones. The herb has been shown to have a stimulatory effect on slow thyroids.

The recommended dosage is 500mg, 1-2x per day.

5. Maca

Maca is an ancient Peruvian fruit that has been long used for its hormone balancing effects. The alkaloids of maca are believed to stimulate the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain in order to better balance the entire endocrine system. The hypothalamus releases thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), which, in turn, stimulates the pituitary gland to release TSH, which stimulates the thyroid gland to release thyroid hormone.

Maca helps to increase the output of thyroid hormones in some people with hypothyroid conditions. Dosages vary from person to person, but most studies have used anywhere from 2 grams to 10 grams per day.

Start with a smaller dose and work your way up until you start feeling a difference. Maca can be bought in supplement form, or as a powder, which can be easily mixed into a smoothie or your morning oatmeal.

Note: As with anything new, especially if you are under the care of a physician, speak with a trusted professional with a background in natural medicine before incorporating anything new into your routine. Some medications can interfere with the efficacy of herbs and vise versa.

Without a Net
by Madisyn Taylor

When we continually live our life with a safety net it creates a barrier to our freedom.

As we create the life of our dreams, we often reach a crossroads where the choices seem to involve the risk of facing the unknown versus the safety and comfort of all that we have come to trust. We may feel like a tightrope walker, carefully teetering along the narrow path to our goals, sometimes feeling that we are doing so without a net. Knowing we have some backup may help us work up the courage to take those first steps, until we are secure in knowing that we have the skills to work without one. But when we live our lives from a place of balance and trust in the universe, we may not see our source of support, but we can know that it is there.

If we refuse to act only if we can see the safety net, we may be allowing the net to become a trap as it creates a barrier between us and the freedom to pursue our goals. Change is inherent in life, so even what we have learned to trust can surprise us at any moment. Remove fear from the equation and then, without even wondering what is going on below, we can devote our full attention to the dream that awaits us.

We attract support into our lives when we are willing to make those first tentative steps, trusting that the universe will provide exactly what we need. In that process we can decide that whatever comes from our actions is only for our highest and best experience of growth. It may come in the form of a soft landing, an unexpected rescue or an eye-opening experience gleaned only from the process of falling. So rather than allowing our lives to be dictated by fear of the unknown, or trying to avoid falling, we can appreciate that sometimes we experience life fully when we are willing to trust and fall. And in doing so, we may just find that we have the wings to fly.

When we believe that there is a reason for everything, we are stepping out with the safety net of the universe, and we know we will make the best from whatever comes our way.

Touch -Healing Our Bodies-
Incorporating human touch in to our everyday lives is vital to the healing of our emotional and physical selves.

Sometimes we might concentrate so much on our spiritual lives that we overlook the wonders of being present in our physical form. When we are more aware of the fact that our bodies are also important in terms of our personal growth, we may find it easier to nurture them. One of the most powerful ways to do this is through human touch, for a loving, comforting touch allows us to access the part of ourselves that yearns for a sense of oneness with the world around us. Even simple forms of touch connect us not just to our bodies but also to the energetic presence of other people.

There are so many ways to incorporate touch in our daily lives, one of the easiest being a heartfelt embrace. Just making a point to hug someone on a daily basis and really feel our energy pass between each other can strengthen the bonds that keep us together. Hugs help us heal any hurt or upset we may have recently experienced by letting us release into the moment of the embrace and realize that no matter what happens to us, we have someone in our lives who supports and cares for us.

Another nourishing form of touch is massage. While we may think of massage as a luxury, it is actually an ancient form of healing that enables us to open up our energetic pathways in order to receive unlimited energy from the universe. It doesn’t matter whether a simple massage comes from a loved one or a massage therapist, but by giving ourselves the gift of massage every once in a while, we are doing something healthy and beneficial for our bodies. Massage helps our bodies activate their own restorative powers, creating a wonderful way to engage fully in our own healing.

Letting ourselves take advantage of the healing nature of touch creates space where we can truly live in and experience the world through our bodies, allowing us to completely immerse ourselves in the loving sense of joy and wonder that is our life. Sore arch out and touch someone or book your massage today. Enjoy the rich benefits of touch.

17 Surprising Benefits Of Chanting Om
By Matt Caron and Sue Ling

Om (AUM) is considered to be one of the most important sounds in all the universe and has been chanted for thousands of years. It’s believed continuous practice leads to profound enlightenment. But there are more than just a few benefits to this powerful, ancient practice…there are many that affect us and our environment in different ways.

Here’s how (By Sue)

Om (Aum) is often called the “sound of the universe”. People can get a little freaked out about chanting OM (or AUM) their first few times. I was. It just seemed weird at first…but the more I practiced, the more I loved the vibration…ESPECIALLY with a big group of people.

The infographic above is a detail of the symbol for AUM, and provides a little deeper meaning about it….but for beginners, here’s what’s up:

The AUM chant is actually 4 sounds:

1. A…sounds like “aaahhh”. The vibration begins in your chest….
2. U…sounds like the o in “home”. You will feel this resonating in your throat. Go ahead, make the sound, and put your hand over your throat. It vibrates! (this isn’t ALL just hippie-dippie stuff!)
3. M…sounds like “mmmm”. This sound that can be felt in your head.
4. Silence. take a moment after chanting to feel the vibration, and listen to the stillness.

Benefits:
The vibration that resonates in your body when you chant has both physical and physiological benefits! It can bring a sense of calm and focus, it can decrease blood pressure, increase relaxation, and the vibration can give a little massage to your chest, throat and head.

17 Om (AUM) Chanting Benefits (Matt)

• Chanting of the Om Mantra purifies the environment around you and creates positive vibrations.
• Your concentration increases when you chant this universal hymn.
• Om chanting gives you better immunity and self-healing power.
• It improves your concentration and helps you focus.
• The Om chanting produces a vibration and sound which is felt through your vocal cords and sinuses. The vibrations open up the sinuses to clear the airways.
• It can place you in a meditational state which gives you deep relaxation.
• The Om not only benefits the person who is chanting it but also to the people around them, wherever its vibrations flow.
• The Om Mantra has cardiovascular benefits – by relaxing our mind and body, our blood pressure will decrease and our heart will beat with regular rhythm.
• Om chanting actually improves your voice by giving strength to your vocal cords and the muscles around it. This is very helpful during old age.
• It is said that rubbing your hands together while om chanting and putting those charged hands on different parts of body heals or activates those body parts.
• Through chanting and meditation, you can have better control over your emotions, thus allowing you to see situations with a clear and rational mind.
• Regular chanting of this Mantra will take you on a spiritual journey to greater happiness and positivity, but only if it is done daily for a longer period of time. Mantras are not an overnight fix to your problems – you must have patience and learn the correct techniques.
• When the OM Mantra is chanted in a group, the effects are amplified and this will produce immense positive vibrations which charge up the entire vicinity.
• It has been our experience that Om can even help cleanse your skin. The massive levels of internal positive energy and a cleansed aura that come from chanting the Om Mantra regularly will be reflected externally with a sunny glow on your face and body.
• Your spinal cord is strengthened through the vibrations caused by sound of Aaaa. As this sound is generated from abdomen, it helps to strengthen the supporting muscles of the spinal cord.
• The sound uuu is created by vocal cords which benefit the thyroid glands and the throat.
• If you’re looking at the spiritual eye while chanting, your eyesight will start improving.
