Congratulations to Brienna Colon, a phlebotomist at Mount Sinai Medical Center, on winning the Sunflower Award!

Brienna was recognized for the exceptional care she provided to a patient during a stressful and emotional visit for follow-up testing. Understanding the patient’s anxiety, Brienna took the time to carefully locate the patient’s vein and successfully completed the blood draw on the first attempt while providing reassurance throughout the process.

Her patience, skill, and dedication were essential during a challenging experience that helped the patient feel respected and at ease.

Thank you, Brienna, for delivering compassionate care and making a difference in the lives of our patients!

From observation to leadership in three weeks: a look at how Mount Sinai Medical Center is shaping the next generation of physicians.

Last summer, Mount Sinai's Key West Primary Care, Walk-in Clinic and Diagnostic Center welcomed its first cohort of medical students from Florida State University College of Medicine, including second-year student Max Belkin. Paired with Dr. Kellee Reed, a board-certified emergency medicine physician at Mount Sinai Key West, Max progressed from shadowing patient encounters to independently leading them, gaining hands-on experience with procedures and diagnoses unique to the Florida Keys.

"When students come in for three weeks, you have a choice," Dr. Reed says. "You can keep them on the sidelines, or you can teach them. I would rather take the time to walk Student Doctor Belkin through a decision and then step back and let him make those calls. That is how confidence gets built, and that is how good physicians are made."

The program's impact speaks for itself: applications from FSU medical students grew more than fivefold this year. Mount Sinai is not only committed to providing high quality care to patients but also training physicians who understand community medicine from the ground up, one student at a time.

Every year, Mount Sinai Medical Center's Preemie Party brings together some of our smallest miracles for one very special reunion.

Former preemie patients—ranging from little ones who recently graduated from our NICU to those born many years ago—returned to celebrate just how far they've come. It was a heartwarming day as Dr. Jose Adams, the Chief of the Division of Neonatology, and his partner, Dr. Ignacio Zabaleta, reunited with the children they once cared for as tiny newborns.

The celebration was filled with cake, fun activities, smiles, and a special visit from Woody and Jessie from Toy Story, creating unforgettable memories for our families. Our dedicated maternity and NICU team members were also there to celebrate with their patients.

Thank you to all of the families who joined us for this special celebration. Seeing our former preemie patients thrive is a powerful reminder of what compassionate, high-quality care can achieve.

When Monroe County Sheriff's Office Deputy Elizabeth McNally arrived at Mount Sinai Medical Center, she was determined to get back to the career she had worked so hard to achieve.

After an MRI revealed a tumor compressing her thoracic spinal cord, Elizabeth was rushed to Mount Sinai, where neurosurgeon Dr. Anirudh Penumaka performed surgery to remove the tumor before permanent damage could occur.

Now, just weeks later, she's taking on physical therapy in her police work boots, preparing for the day she can return to duty. Her determination, paired with expert surgical care and rehabilitation, has led to an extraordinary recovery.

"If my recovery stopped right here, and this is as good as it got, I'm thrilled," Elizabeth said. "Because of Dr. Penumaka, I am going to have an amazing recovery."

At Mount Sinai, stories like Elizabeth's are a testament to the power of expert care, resilience, and the unwavering commitment to helping patients get back to doing what they love.
