Being told you need dialysis can bring a lot of questions: What will treatment feel like? How often will I need to come in? What can I eat and drink? How will dialysis fit into my everyday life?

You don’t have to figure everything out at once.

At First Prevention Dialysis Center, our team is here to help patients understand the process, prepare for treatment, and feel supported as they adjust to a new routine. We believe dialysis care should address more than treatment itself—it should include education, communication, compassion, and respect for the individual behind the diagnosis.

If you or someone you love is preparing to begin dialysis, reach out to our team and start getting the answers you need.

Your kidneys work around the clock to help filter waste and excess fluid from your blood, but changes in kidney function may not always be obvious at first.

Swelling in the feet or ankles, ongoing fatigue, changes in urination, nausea, and shortness of breath can have many possible causes, but they can also occur with kidney problems. That’s why persistent or unexplained changes shouldn’t simply be ignored.

If you have concerns about your kidney health—especially if you have risk factors such as high blood pressure or diabetes—talk with a healthcare professional about whether kidney testing may be appropriate.

At First Prevention Dialysis Center, we believe knowledge and early awareness can help patients take a more active role in their health.

If you’ve never experienced dialysis before, the process can sound much more intimidating than it actually is. Understanding what happens during treatment can help remove some of that uncertainty.

During hemodialysis, your blood travels through a dialyzer — sometimes called an artificial kidney — where waste products and excess fluid are removed. The cleaned blood is then safely returned to your body.

In simple terms, the process involves three main steps:

1️⃣ Blood leaves your body through your dialysis access and travels through sterile tubing to the dialysis machine.
2️⃣ Blood is cleaned as it passes through the dialyzer, which helps remove waste and excess fluid your kidneys can no longer adequately eliminate.
3️⃣ Cleaned blood returns to your body, and this process continues throughout your prescribed treatment.

But dialysis care is about much more than a machine. Your treatment team monitors you throughout your session and follows important factors such as blood pressure, fluid removal, access function, and how you’re feeling.

At First Prevention Dialysis Center, we want patients to understand what is happening during their treatment and feel comfortable asking questions along the way.

Knowledge can make dialysis feel a little less unfamiliar — and you never have to navigate it alone. 💛

Being told that dialysis may be in your future can bring a lot of questions.

When will I need to start? What type of dialysis is right for me? What will treatment feel like? How will this change my everyday life?

Those questions deserve clear, thoughtful answers.

Before dialysis begins, your care team will evaluate your kidney function, review your overall health, discuss your treatment options, and help determine the appropriate next steps. If hemodialysis is recommended, planning may also include preparing a vascular access ahead of treatment whenever possible.

At First Prevention Dialysis Center, Dr. Ifeanyi Isaiah and our team believe patients should understand their care — not simply be told what happens next. We take the time to answer questions, discuss options, and help patients and their families feel better prepared for the road ahead.

A dialysis recommendation can feel overwhelming. Having an experienced team beside you can make the next step feel much more manageable. 💙

Your kidneys may be small, but the amount of work they perform every single day is incredible.

Pop quiz: How much blood do you think your kidneys filter each day?

Healthy kidneys filter approximately 150 quarts of blood each day, removing waste and excess water to produce about 1–2 quarts of urine. This continuous filtering process helps your body maintain the right balance of fluids, minerals, and electrolytes. Your kidneys also play important roles in blood pressure regulation, red blood cell production, and bone health.

The challenge is that kidney function can decline without causing obvious symptoms in the early stages. That’s why understanding your kidney numbers — including your eGFR and urine albumin levels — can be so important, especially if you have risk factors such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Your kidneys are working around the clock. Make sure you’re paying attention to them, too. 💛

You can feel completely normal while changes are happening in your kidneys.

Chronic kidney disease often develops gradually, and many people may not notice obvious symptoms during its earlier stages. That's one reason routine testing can be so important—especially for people who have risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or a family history of kidney disease.

Simple blood and urine tests can give healthcare providers valuable information about how well your kidneys are working. Finding changes earlier may allow you and your healthcare provider to address underlying conditions and discuss steps to help protect your kidney health.

Don't wait until something feels wrong to start paying attention to your kidneys.

Know your numbers. Ask about your kidney health. Early testing matters.

Have you noticed swelling around your ankles, feet, or lower legs?

Swelling—also called edema—can occur when excess fluid collects in the body's tissues. There are many possible causes, but changes in the body's ability to manage fluid can sometimes be associated with kidney problems.

Healthy kidneys help regulate the amount of fluid and sodium in the body. When kidney function is impaired, excess fluid may accumulate and contribute to swelling.

Kidney disease is not the only possible explanation for swollen ankles, which is why persistent, unexplained, new, or worsening swelling shouldn't simply be ignored.

Pay attention to what your body is telling you. If you're experiencing ongoing swelling—particularly alongside changes in urination, shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, or other concerning symptoms—contact your healthcare provider for appropriate evaluation.

Your body can give you clues. Knowing when to pay attention matters.
