Summer Learning Series: Tip #2 — Read Every Day

One of the simplest ways to support learning during the summer is to encourage daily reading.

The best part? It doesn't need to be complicated.

Whether your child enjoys graphic novels, sports magazines, chapter books, or listening to an audiobook while following along with the text, every reading experience helps strengthen important literacy skills.

This week's challenge:
📚 Read for just 15 minutes each day.

Small, consistent habits can help children maintain reading skills and build confidence before heading back to school.

What is your child's favorite thing to read right now?

Play-Based Therapy Toy of the Day: Cars and Car Ramp!

A simple car toy is a very effective tool for language facilitation. Cars provide us with a great opportunity to expose your child to action words and core vocabulary.

Focus on narrating their play using play-routines such as "Ready, set, go!" "Stop and go!”

Other words we love teaching our clients during car-themed play time include "my turn," "your turn," "beep beep," "more," "fast," "slow," "up," "drove," "drive," and "park!"

Getting Ready for Scissor Skills ✂️

Children can begin developing the skills needed for cutting long before they ever pick up a pair of scissors.

Simple activities like ripping tissues, ripping paper, and crumpling paper help strengthen the small muscles in the hands and fingers while encouraging both hands to work together.

These fun, hands-on activities build the strength, coordination, and bilateral skills that create a strong foundation for future scissor use and other fine motor tasks.

Social Skills Tip #1: Be an Active Listener! 👂
Active listening is an important social skill that helps us build friendships, understand others, and have meaningful conversations. When we listen carefully, we show others that we value what they have to say.

When we develop active listening skills, we are better able to:

• Take turns during conversations.
• Stay engaged and focused on others.
• Respond appropriately to what someone is saying.

We can encourage our students to be active listeners by asking themselves:

Am I looking at the person who is speaking?
Can I think of a question or comment about what they said?
Listening is one of the best ways to connect with others!

☀️ Summer Learning Series: Tip #1 — Keep Learning Light

Summer is a time for rest, fun, and making memories—but it can also be a great opportunity to keep young minds active.

The good news? Learning doesn’t have to look like worksheets or long study sessions.

Try incorporating learning into everyday activities:

📚 Read together for 15–20 minutes each day.
🛒 Practice math while shopping, cooking, or budgeting.
✏️ Encourage journaling about summer adventures.
🎲 Play board games that build problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
🌎 Explore museums, parks, libraries, and local community events.

Small, consistent learning opportunities can help children maintain important academic skills while still enjoying a well-deserved summer break.

Follow along all summer as our Educational Team shares practical tips to support learning at home!

Play-Based Therapy Toy of the Day: Spin Again Toy!

This toy is a great way to improve your child's language and motor development skills.

Try using the language facilitation strategy of "parallel-talk" where you narrate your child's play as they engage in play with the Spin Again toy.

For example, "Red on, down down down! Stop! More pieces. Blue up up up!”

This strategy will help your child associate their meaningful and engaging play with specific language heard from a loving adult.

Every activity in Occupational Therapy is intentional.

What may look like play is actually carefully designed to support development across the brain — not just fine motor skills.

Yes, we work on handwriting and coordination, but those are just a window into bigger skills like attention, regulation, sensory processing, and motor planning.

Our goal is to support children in becoming more independent in their everyday functional activities.

Let’s Get Social!

Social skills are the tools we use to connect with others, build friendships, and navigate everyday interactions. From starting conversations and taking turns to reading social cues and working as a team, these skills help us feel confident and connected.

Join us this month as our Peaces practice important social skills through fun activities, role-playing, and real-life experiences. Together, we’ll learn how to communicate effectively, build meaningful relationships, and make positive connections with those around us.

Every interaction is an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect!
