Zinc Oxide — FDA Update
One sunscreen ingredient worth knowing: zinc oxide.

Zinc oxide remains an evidence-supported mineral sunscreen option for broad-spectrum UV protection. The FDA’s current sunscreen update also removed PABA and trolamine salicylate from the OTC sunscreen monograph because the agency concluded their risks outweighed their benefits.

My practical takeaway: if you prefer a mineral sunscreen, zinc oxide is an easy active ingredient to recognize on the label. Pair sunscreen with shade, hats, and protective clothing for more complete sun protection.

This is a regulatory update, not a treatment study.

Psyllium Can Help Lower LDL
Not all fiber affects cholesterol the same way.

Psyllium is one of the better-studied viscous soluble fibers for LDL support. In a meta-analysis of 28 randomized controlled trials with 1,924 participants, psyllium lowered LDL cholesterol by about 12.9 mg/dL compared with control. The median psyllium dose across the trials was about 10.2 g/day, and the studies lasted at least 3 weeks.

That is the kind of result I like because it gives us an actual number — not just “it helped.” Consistency matters, and longer studies have also shown sustained LDL reductions with psyllium.

Daily Fiber Boost by Metagenics contains psyllium husk + oat hull fiber. The LDL research is on psyllium/soluble fiber, not this exact branded formula, and the product does not separately state the grams of psyllium per scoop, so one scoop should not be treated as the study dose.

If your fiber intake is low, increase gradually and use adequate fluid according to the product directions.

STUDY PROTOCOL: 28 randomized trials, 1,924 participants, median psyllium dose about 10.2 g/day, duration at least 3 weeks. Protocols varied.

A Short Walk After Meals Can Help Lower the Glucose Spike
A short walk after eating can make a measurable difference in the rise in blood sugar that follows a meal.

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis found that exercise performed after eating reduced post-meal glucose more than exercising before the meal or remaining inactive. The benefit appeared strongest when activity was started relatively soon after eating.

Another randomized crossover study in adults with type 2 diabetes compared one 30-minute daily walk with three 10-minute walks after the main meals. Post-meal walking produced lower post-meal glucose overall, with the largest improvement after dinner.

STUDY PROTOCOL: In the Reynolds trial, participants completed 10 minutes of walking after each main meal for 2 weeks. This was compared with one 30-minute walk each day.

Stronger Bones, Brighter Days
Getting older doesn’t mean getting weaker.

Progressive resistance training can help preserve muscle strength and support bone health as we age. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 randomized trials in adults age 65 and older found that progressive resistance training increased lower-limb muscle strength and femur/hip bone mineral density. The strength evidence was more certain than the bone-density evidence, and lumbar-spine bone mineral density did not significantly improve.

STUDY PROTOCOL: Programs varied across the included trials. Eligible studies used progressive resistance training for at least 4 weeks; the review did not establish one universal regimen.

Why Some Foods Make It Easier to Keep Eating
Ultra-processed foods can make it easier to consume more calories — and a tightly controlled NIH study showed just how large that difference can be.

In this randomized inpatient crossover trial, 20 adults ate an ultra-processed diet for 2 weeks and an unprocessed diet for 2 weeks. They could eat as much or as little as they wanted.

During the ultra-processed phase, participants consumed about 508 more calories per day and gained about 0.9 kg on average. During the unprocessed phase, they lost about 0.9 kg.

Importantly, the diets were matched for presented calories, energy density, macronutrients, sugar, sodium, and fiber.

STUDY PROTOCOL: 20 adults; 2 weeks on each diet in a randomized inpatient crossover design.

This was a short-term feeding study, so it should not be interpreted as proof that every processed food causes obesity.

Neck and upper-back tension can affect more than just your comfort—it may interfere with sleep, driving, exercise, and everyday movement. 💆‍♀️

Research in adults with cervical myofascial pain has studied electroacupuncture as part of a broader treatment plan, alongside exercise and medication. In one randomized trial, the electroacupuncture group showed greater improvements in several measures of pain, disability, range of motion, and pressure-pain sensitivity through the 3-month assessment.

The research protocol included 6 electroacupuncture sessions over 3 weeks, but every person is different and treatment should always be individualized.

Exercise is one of the most useful non-drug tools for metabolic fatty liver disease, and the benefit is not limited to the number on the scale.

A systematic review and meta-analysis found that an exercise dose of at least 750 MET-minutes per week—roughly 150 minutes per week of brisk walking—was associated with a clinically meaningful reduction in MRI-measured liver fat, even without losing more than 5% of body weight.

Acutrition can help you build a realistic nutrition and movement plan around your health history, fitness level and goals.

Tennis Elbow / Lateral Elbow Tendinopathy You do not have to play tennis to develop tennis elbow. Repetitive gripping, lifting, carrying and twisting can irritate the tendons on the outside of the elbow and make daily tasks painful.

In a randomized, patient- and investigator-blinded trial, 10 acupuncture treatments produced greater early improvements in pain, arm function and maximal strength than sham acupuncture. A later meta-analysis found the overall acupuncture evidence promising but limited by trial quality.

The best plan usually combines symptom relief with activity modification and progressive loading. Schedule an Acutrition evaluation for an individualized approach. PainRelief RepetitiveStrain

Anxiety can show up as racing thoughts, restlessness, muscle tension and disrupted sleep.

In a randomized trial of 60 adults with generalized anxiety disorder, acupuncture at HT-7 and GV-20 for 20 minutes daily over 10 days reduced anxiety scores more than breath-awareness meditation. Broader systematic-review evidence also supports acupuncture as a potentially useful non-drug option, although study quality and protocols vary.

Acupuncture should not replace urgent or ongoing mental-health care. Ask Acutrition whether it may fit into your broader stress- and anxiety-support plan.

STUDY PROTOCOL / DOSE

10 acupuncture sessions: 1 session daily for 10 days, 20 minutes per session. This was the research protocol; your treatment plan may differ based on your condition, response, and clinical assessment.
