Eating healthy, exercising and still have high cholesterol? Your habits may not be the whole story.

Genetics can play a major role in how much cholesterol your body produces and how efficiently it gets rid of it. That means some people may still have high levels despite making healthy choices.

Dr. Tarak Rambhatla, clinical cardiologist, explains why this happens and when medication may become part of managing your cardiovascular risk.

Sometimes, doing everything “right” still means needing a little extra help.

Can dehydration affect your blood pressure? Yes, and it may cause it to go in either direction.

Dr. Ian Del Conde, cardiologist and vascular medicine specialist, explains that dehydration can initially lower blood pressure as blood volume decreases. But as the body compensates, blood vessels can constrict, which may cause blood pressure to rise.

Staying properly hydrated is one part of supporting healthy blood pressure, along with regular exercise, reducing sodium, managing stress and maintaining a healthy weight.

At 25, Danny Cruz was healthy, active and thinking about training for an Ironman. Then, a sudden pain in his chest turned into a life-threatening emergency.

Doctors discovered an acute Type A aortic dissection that required immediate open-heart surgery. Dr. Bradley Taylor, cardiac surgeon, repaired the damaged portion of Danny’s aorta while preserving his natural aortic valve.

Today, Danny is running, playing pickleball and working toward getting back in the water, with his Ironman goal still very much in sight.

This World Heart Day, Danny’s story is a reminder of just how quickly a heart emergency can change a life, and what it can mean to get that life back.

Dr. Bradley Taylor, board-certified cardiac surgeon and chief medical executive at Christine E. Lynn Heart & Vascular Institute, as well as chief of cardiac surgery for the Palm Beach Region and chief of quality and outcomes of Baptist Health Heart & Vascular Care.

Most of us know the warning signs of a heart attack. But there’s another heart emergency that deserves just as much attention: an aortic dissection.

It happens when a tear forms in the wall of the aorta, the body’s main artery, and it can become life-threatening very quickly.

So what does an aortic dissection feel like? One of the biggest warning signs is sudden, severe chest pain that may feel like it’s tearing and travel into the back or abdomen.

Dr. Ashok Kumar, director of aortic disease, breaks down what you need to know about this medical emergency and why there’s no time to wait.
