Some of the earliest biological signs associated with Alzheimer's disease may also appear in the gut. 🧠

In a new study, our researchers found Alzheimer's-related changes in lab-grown intestinal tissue, including damage to the gut barrier, inflammation and accumulation of hallmark disease proteins. The findings offer new clues into the gut-brain connection and could open new areas of research into earlier intervention and treatment.

Ballet and biomedical research might not have much in common at first glance, but for incoming M.D./Ph.D. student Nicole Kujas, they require a lot of the same things. 🩰🔬

Nicole has been dancing since she was 3, going on to perform with Miami City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and Boston Ballet. She credits years of training with teaching her discipline, precision and how to keep pushing when things don’t go as planned, skills she’s already found herself using in the lab.

A University of Miami alum, Nicole is now pursuing her M.D./Ph.D. at the Miller School, with an interest in neuroscience and a career that combines patient care and research.
