One of the biggest misconceptions about emotional regulation is that children should simply “know how to calm down.”
The truth is that regulation is a developmental skill that grows over time.
Just like children learn to walk, communicate, and solve problems, they also learn how to identify emotions, manage frustration, cope with challenges, and recover from difficult moments.
Some children develop these skills naturally, while others benefit from additional support and strategies along the way.
Understanding what regulation looks like at different ages can help us respond with realistic expectations, patience, and support.
