There’s a kind of betrayal almost nobody talks about.

It’s when the affair, in a straight marriage, was with someone of the same s*x. A husband whose affair was with a man. A wife whose affair was with a woman. And the moment it comes to light, everyone around the couple seems to already know exactly what it means. He must be gay. She was living a lie. It’s over.

Here’s what I’ve learned in more than a decade of doing this work: that story, the one everyone jumps to in the first sixty seconds, is rarely the whole truth. And often it isn’t true at all.

That’s what our newest episode of Relationships Uncomplicated is about. I sat down with two colleagues from my team, Dr. Yael Haklai-Neagu and Alana Tokayer. All three of us are licensed marriage and family therapists who specialize in infidelity recovery, and all three of us have sat with couples in exactly this situation.

We get into why a same-s*x affair doesn’t automatically mean someone is gay, why attraction, behavior, and identity are three separate things, and the real reasons a straight-identified partner might have a same-s*x encounter, most of which have nothing to do with being secretly gay.

Whether this is your story, or you know someone living it, or you just want to understand people a little more clearly, I think this one will stay with you.

We don’t hand anyone a verdict. We just open the door a little wider than the one the culture slams shut.

“Am I enough?”

It’s the question that lives underneath all the others. If we heal, if we stay, is he going to spend the rest of his life secretly wanting something I can never give him? Will part of him always be a little empty, a space I can’t reach, because I’m a woman and I’ll always be a woman?

Here’s what I want you to know. Every hurt partner asks am I enough. Every single one, no matter who the affair was with. When it’s a same-s*x affair, that question just gets a shape that feels permanent, like there’s nothing you could ever do about it.

But here’s the piece most people miss. We can’t take what a person is attracted to and assume it dictates what they’ll do, as if they have no control over their own choices. Attraction is one thing. What you build with someone, every day, is another.

So the fear that he’ll always be missing something isn’t the real question. The real question is whether you can build a marriage where you both feel wanted. And that one, we know how to work on.

“Is our story the worst you’ve ever heard?”
It’s one of the first questions couples ask me after infidelity. And when the affair was with someone of the same s*x, that fear gets even louder, because they’ve usually never heard this kind of betrayal talked about anywhere. So it feels rare. And rare feels like doomed.
Here’s what my colleague Alana shares in this clip. It isn’t the worst case. It’s a betrayal with an added layer of complexity, and complexity is not the same thing as hopeless.
Think about a physical injury. Three people can each break a bone, and all three are serious, but one heals cleanly, one comes with nerve damage, and one happens alongside a second injury that has to be treated too. The principles of healing are the same. What changes is what that person’s recovery has to account for.
Same-s*x infidelity is the fracture with the extra complication. The core wound underneath, the broken trust, is one we help couples heal from every day.
If you’re certain you’re the exception, the one story too broken to come back from, I want you to hear this. You’re probably not.

Spending these days at Esther Perel’s Cultivating Aliveness conference has been the kind of experience that doesn’t just inform your work, it reshapes it.
Sitting in a room full of people who think deeply about relationships, desire, and the spaces between us has reminded me why I do what I do. Every conversation here is a reminder that the work of helping couples isn’t about fixing what’s broken. It’s about helping people find their way back to aliveness, to each other, to themselves.
I’m leaving with new questions, sharper instincts, and a renewed sense of how much depth there is to bring into the room with every couple I sit with. The work my team and I do at Relationship Experts has always been about more than recovery. It’s about possibility.
Can’t wait to bring this back into my sessions.

If you’ve decided to stay — but every day you’re tearing your partner apart — that’s not healing. That’s the thing keeping you stuck.
I see this more than you’d think. The lashing out. The interrogating. Going over every detail of the affair — not to understand, but to prosecute.
And I need to ask you: what is that giving you?
Because every time you humiliate the person you’ve chosen to stay with, you’re telling yourself you chose someone worthless. And if they’re worthless — what does that say about your future?
Your anger is valid. But there’s a difference between processing pain and punishing indefinitely. One moves you forward. The other keeps you stuck in the worst moment of your marriage.
So try this shift: instead of cataloging everything they broke, ask yourself what you can still trust. Can you trust them to show up if you got sick? To be a good parent? To have your back when it matters?
Your partner is more than the worst thing they did. If you’ve chosen to stay — let that truth have some room.

Forgiveness is not a one-sided gift you give your unfaithful partner.
It’s not something you owe. It’s not proof that you’ve healed. And it’s definitely not something anyone else gets to put on a timeline for you.
Forgiveness — just like trust — has to be earned. Through action. Through consistency. Through showing up differently when no one’s watching.
And here’s what I want every hurt partner to hear: you hold the power to allow that. Not because you’re obligated to. Because when the conditions are right — when you’ve been heard, when remorse is real, when trust has been rebuilt one small moment at a time — you get to choose.
That’s not withholding. That’s wisdom.
To the unfaithful partner: you don’t get to ask for forgiveness. You get to earn the conditions that make it possible. And then you wait.
That’s the hardest part. And also the most loving.
I’m Idit Sharoni, LMFT, and I help couples save their relationships, rebuild trust, and create marriages that are stronger than ever.
Save this for the day you need the reminder.
