Preventive Dentistry:
Not only is the Dentist examining your teeth for decay including X-rays, also they are examining the gums by probing, texture and overall oral health. Your Dentist should also examine the cheeks, the tongue(entirely), inner upper and lower lips. This exam is to rule out oral cancer. Any lesion that is found in the mouth is given a two week period for possible trauma. If it does not disappear it will need to be evaluated by the Oral Surgeon.
Dental cleanings and exams should be done every 6 months. Once a year is a good time to take X-rays for possible decay, fractures or infections.
