Trauma!
Trauma is passed on from generation to generation by our genetics and our behaviors, but so are skills, so its resilience, and so is regulation. We help our children thrive by showing them how to stay calm and effective during the storm. It is not the fear of the storm that keeps us a live, it’s knowing the storm is coming and preparing for it. In the midst of chaos become the peace you wish to find.

Unmasking Autism: From Ostracized to Empowered

In this deeply honest and inspiring episode of the Mindful Combat Podcast, Dr. Miki Anderson shares her powerful journey of discovering she was autistic later in life and what it truly meant to finally embrace her identity. With vulnerability and wisdom, she opens up about growing up feeling misunderstood and ostracized, navigating her mother’s views on autism, and the emotional impact of living in a world that often failed to recognize her differences.
Together, we explore why receiving an autism diagnosis can be life-changing, even for those who may not feel they need significant support. Dr. Anderson offers profound insight into the importance of self-understanding, self-compassion, and reclaiming the parts of ourselves we were once taught to hide.
In this episode, I also share my own vulnerable journey as the mother of an autistic daughter who also has comorbid diagnoses. I speak openly about the mistakes I have made, the lessons I have learned, and the ongoing process of becoming a more aware, compassionate, and intentional parent.
This conversation is about identity, healing, acceptance, and the courage it takes to truly see yourself and the people you love. It is a reminder that understanding ourselves more deeply can transform not only our lives, but also our relationships, our families, and the way we move through the world.

Who Am I? Adoption, Identity & Growth

In this honest, heartfelt, and deeply moving episode of the Mindful Combat podcast, I sit down with Dr. James Sclater, a psychotherapist, researcher, and adoptee whose work explores the powerful connection between adoption and the development of self-concept. Through years of research and personal experience, Dr. Sclater offers rare insight into the emotional world of adoptees, courageously sharing not only the stories and struggles of his research participants, but also pieces of his own journey growing up adopted.

Together, we explore the profound impact identity, belonging, attachment, and self-awareness have on the human experience. This conversation goes far beyond adoption, it is a powerful reflection on what it means to truly see, understand, and nurture another human being. I also share parts of my own experience as an adoptive parent, opening an authentic dialogue about the emotional responsibility, growth, and humility required in the parenting journey.

This episode is honest, vulnerable, and deeply human. It is a conversation about becoming, awareness, connection, and the lifelong process of understanding ourselves and each other more compassionately. Whether you are an adoptee, an adoptive parent, a mental health professional, or simply someone seeking deeper self-awareness, this episode will challenge your perspective and inspire greater empathy, intentionality, and love.
