The old ideas die hard
Good strength training prioritizes sport specific goals first and foremost
If your sport is weight based (or aesthetics), you can still workout- and NOT gain weight!
Not all strength sessions have to be HOURS long! Good programs work as a supplement to technical training
Strength training THROUGH the full range can improve flexibility, not limit it!
The silver lining of getting physio at the studios is the introduction to a formal training program- no guess work, no gimmicks, no flashy movements. Just what the athlete needs to get back to rehearsals, stronger, more flexible & more confident

Exercise science 101

SAID: Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands
The body is designed to respond and adapt to environment stressors- exercise, heat, cold etc…
Progressive, well programmed exercise has the benefits of strength development, tendon and ligament resiliency and neurological function
Without adequate rest, the system will break down
Everyone, and every structure, has different breaking points
Besides the crazy stuff we see on meme pages about planet fitness or crunch gyms, most exercises have some degree of utility
Blanket statements like ‘I would NEVER do THIS exercise because it will cripple you for life’ is often nonsensical click bait
Proper exercise selection & programming via science and understanding individual variation via ‘art’ are equally important when working with athletes (and weekend warriors)

Injuries can disrupt nerve signaling and alter how our brain interprets and processes this information
This altered processing can present as falls, missteps, or even apprehension with movement
Your brain senses a mismatch between the environment and its capability in completing the task
Ankle sprains, meniscus tears & hip impingement affect our somatosensory system, shifting towards a heavier weight of vision and vestibular systems

Simple phrases to keep your patients head in the game
No cast members were hurt in the making of this video

Vision, vestibular system & proprioception work together to maintain balance & coordination in dynamic environments

Remove one, and the system needs to adjust
Remove vision and the other two systems contribute more

But if those ‘intact’ systems are not supplementing correctly, poor balance results
In this example we have Jess, a talented dancer for Royal Caribbean, with very poor vision, demonstrating how important glasses are
She doesn’t like glasses or contacts so I’m writing this post not just to educate athletes, but also to get her mom to gift her the blessing of LASIK eye surgery. This will reduce her injury rates (better balance) & prolong her career

Looks good. Not good.
While extra flexibility will get you that aesthetic look, it’s also predisposing you to certain types of injuries & other chronic conditions
With most of the cast members I work with, I often de-emphasize stretching & focus on end range of motion strength training
This is especially important for professional athletes- control is maintained throughout the joints range- that’s what gives you the graceful, easy, natural look
