This 9-year-old boy was born blind in his left eye, which also developed differently in appearance. Today, we fitted him with a custom, hand-painted soft contact lens designed specifically for him.

While this lens cannot restore his vision, it can make a meaningful difference in how he feels when interacting with others. Seeing his confidence begin to grow is a powerful reminder that sometimes our work goes far beyond the eye. It can change how a child sees himself and how comfortably he steps into the world.

Hey guys, Dr. Boshnick here. This technology is called Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT. You can think of it almost like an MRI for the eye because it allows us to take very detailed images of the back of the eye.

With OCT, we’re able to evaluate important structures such as the retina, optic nerve, macula, and blood vessels. In this image, we’re looking at a patient’s retina, and you can see where part of the retinal tissue appears to be separating from the underlying tissue.

This is a very important part of our examination because it helps us detect potential problems in the back of the eye. If we see something that needs further evaluation or treatment, we refer the patient to a retina specialist.

Hi, Dr. Boshnick here. One of the advanced technologies we use in our office is called a specular microscope, which allows us to take a very close look at the innermost layer of the cornea.

This layer contains endothelial cells, which play an important role in keeping the cornea clear and healthy. These cells help regulate fluid in the cornea, and when the cell count becomes too low, patients may experience swelling, cloudy vision, or other corneal problems.

This technology is especially important for patients with a history of eye trauma, corneal transplants, genetic conditions, or certain corneal diseases. By measuring the health and number of these cells, we can better understand what is happening inside the eye and make more informed decisions about a patient’s vision care.

Hi everyone, Dr. Boshnick here. Today I want to talk about one of the most important technologies we use to help evaluate and monitor eye health: the Cirrus OCT.

Many patients ask what an OCT scan is. The easiest way to understand it is to think of it as something similar to an MRI for the eye. While it doesn’t use magnets like an MRI, it creates highly detailed cross-sectional images of the structures inside your eye without touching the eye or causing discomfort.

The Cirrus OCT allows us to look beneath the surface of the retina and optic nerve with incredible precision. It helps us detect changes that may not be visible during a routine eye examination and often identifies problems long before a patient notices symptoms.

One of the most valuable features of this technology is its ability to evaluate the optic nerve. This is especially important when monitoring conditions such as glaucoma, where damage can occur gradually over time. By measuring the thickness of the nerve fiber layers, we can track even subtle changes and make informed decisions about treatment and management.

The Cirrus OCT also gives us a detailed view of the tiny blood vessels within the retina. This can provide valuable information about circulation in the eye and help identify changes associated with conditions such as diabetes, macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease, and other eye health concerns.

Another interesting fact is that the scan takes only a few seconds to perform, is completely non-invasive, and produces thousands of data points that help us better understand the health of your eyes. The level of detail is remarkable, allowing us to see structures that are impossible to evaluate with the naked eye alone.

Technology like the Cirrus OCT has transformed the way we diagnose, monitor, and protect vision. Early detection remains one of the most important factors in preserving sight, and advanced imaging tools like this help us provide the highest level of care possible.

One of the other important things the TERA Dry Eye Imager by Topcon Corporation allows us to evaluate is the health of the eyelids, eyelashes, and the lid margin. A lot of patients think dry eye only has to do with tears, but in reality, the condition of the eyelids plays a major role in the overall health of the ocular surface. Inflammation along the lid margin, damaged eyelashes, clogged glands, or debris around the lashes can all contribute to chronic dry eye symptoms, irritation, redness, fluctuating vision, and discomfort throughout the day.

What’s impressive about this technology is that it gives us highly detailed imaging of these structures, allowing us to detect subtle changes that may not be visible during a routine eye exam alone. In many patients, we can identify early inflammation or abnormalities before the symptoms become more severe. In this image, the patient’s eyelids and eyelashes actually appear relatively healthy, which is reassuring. But very often, we see patients where the lid margins are inflamed, the eyelashes are compromised, or there are signs of chronic irritation that need to be treated properly.

These findings are extremely important because untreated eyelid disease can continue to worsen the ocular surface over time. Patients may experience persistent dry eye symptoms, blurry vision, burning, tearing, or sensitivity to light without fully understanding the underlying cause. By identifying these issues early with the TERA system, we can create a more targeted treatment plan and address the root cause instead of simply masking the symptoms.

One of the most common issues I see in my patients, especially those who’ve had procedures like LASIK, Radial Keratotomy, corneal transplants, or who are dealing with Keratoconus, is chronic dry eye that directly impacts vision quality. This isn’t just about irritation or redness. When the surface of the eye becomes unstable, your vision can fluctuate, blur, and feel inconsistent throughout the day.

Hey guys, Dr. Boshnick here. I wanted to introduce you to a new piece of technology we just brought into the practice, the TERA Dry Eye Imager by Topcon Corporation.

This lets us take a really detailed look at the front surface of your eye. We can evaluate tear film, check the meibomian glands, and map out the cornea to see exactly what’s going on, especially when it comes to dry eye or any irregularities.

What’s great about it is how it helps guide treatment. It gives me the information I need to design specialty or scleral lenses specifically for your eye, not a one size fits all approach.

Overall, it just helps us be more precise and make better decisions when it comes to your vision and eye health.

Dr. Boshnick here. Let me show you one of the most powerful technologies we use in modern eye care: Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT. Think of it like an ultrasound, but instead of sound waves, it uses light waves to create incredibly detailed cross-section images of the inside of your eye. This allows us to see layers that are impossible to examine with a regular exam.
