You may be grieving the relationship you thought you’d grow old in.
You may be grieving the parent-child relationship you wished you had.
You may be grieving the dream of becoming a parent.
You may be grieving a version of your career, identity, or future that no longer fits.
And at the same time, you may genuinely love parts of the life you have now.

That emotional mix can feel confusing. Conflicting. Even guilt-inducing.
But humans are capable of holding a wide range of emotions at once.

Grief and gratitude can coexist.
Love and disappointment can coexist.
Relief and sadness can coexist.

Healing is often less about choosing the “right” emotion and more about making space for the complexity of being human.

Sometimes I like to dream of a world in which we all had access to mental health awareness and education, especially early in life. With the skills and strategies to care for ourselves and our community we could buffer many challenges, prevent possible hardships, and improve effective care with early, supported education.

Since that isn’t the world we live in now, I asked some incredible mental health clinicians to help share their words of wisdom. If we sit with and share these thoughts we can improve awareness and combat stigma.
