What is the difference between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Dermatology and Western Dermatology?

TCM Dermatology focuses on:

✨ The root cause of your skin concerns.
✨ Diagnosis system is more detailed. There are tons of things to consider. Your consultation at a western office will take 15 min versus your hour-long first visit at CAM.
✨ Personalized prescribed herbal formulas help the whole body heal versus just a topical solution.

Western Dermatology focuses on:

✨ What your general skin symptoms are.
✨ Treats each skin condition case similarly to use similar drugs/products per case
✨ Incorporates topical medications, which are usually temporary.

There is nothing wrong with western dermatology, but it's also important to consider the root cause of your concerns to get to a more long-term solution.

Do you have psoriasis or eczema? Here's how to protect your skin from the sun this summer! SHARE this now! 👏

☀️  1. Start by limiting your daily exposure - try to limit to 5 min a day and see how your skin reacts
☀️ 2. Avoid the sun between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. - this is when it's most likely to cause sunburn
☀️ 3. Use sunblock - 30 SPF or higher
☀️ 4.Avoid tanning salons - they use high concentrations of UVA, compromising your skin even more

There is evidence that moderate exposure can alleviate symptoms by triggering the release of compounds that helps dampen inflammation.

So how long is long enough? The "ideal" exposure time will depend largely on how sensitive your skin is to sunlight. 🤷‍♀️

Generally speaking, natural sunlight is considered safe for people with eczema when exposure is limited to 10 to 30 minutes of sunlight several times per week. 👍

However, be aware that sunlight won't help everyone. Heat and sweat are common eczema triggers, making sun therapy a poor choice if your eczema tends to flare when you are overheated or during the summer months. 😎

Seriously, sunscreen is for life because it protects us for life... literally! Sunscreen is our first line of defense to causing further damage to our skin. 🤯

Don't believe us? Search up sun exposure age spots on Google and see what you find (we bet you'll RUN to get more sunscreen).🏃‍♀️

The rule of thumb is to reapply every two hours when outside. 😊

Double-tap if you didn't wear sunscreen 10 years ago. Did you know sun damage won't always show itself right away? It can take up to 10 years for signs of damage caused by too much sun exposure to come up! 👏

This is because photodamage happens in the deepest layers of the skin—the dermis.

After a couple of years, some signs of sun damage may look like wrinkling, loss of facial elasticity, and spots. 🤔

SO this is your REMINDER to wear your sunscreen all day, every day. DNA damage can lead to sunburns and even skin cancer -- and new studies show that this damage can continue to occur even after sun exposure ends. 😲

Life is all about balance. This Summer, you need to balance yourself by eating more "YIN" (cold) foods rather than "YANG" (warm). ☯️

Here are some of CAM's favorite Yin food options perfect to add to your Summer diet.

1. Cucumber
2. Watercress
3. Watermelon

5. Mint

Chinese medicine philosophy integrates the concept of yin and yang into all aspects of our lives and health. Summer is one of the most yang periods of the year- meaning hot, active, and lots of movement. 🥵

You've probably heard Vitamin D is ESSENTIAL for our health, but there are more ways to get Vit D besides the sun. ☀️ Here are Dr. Jessica's top 4 foods to up your vitamin D game. 🙌

1. Salmon
2. Mushrooms
3. Cod liver oil
4. Eggs

Eating foods rich in Vitamin D are also good for your gut microbiome, which plays an important role in our health and fighting the risk of disease. 😷

There have also been studies showing that people with higher levels of active vitamin D in their systems also show a greater range of "friendly bacteria", helping keep our body and skin healthy and balanced. 😊

Do you know how to pick your sunblock for psoriasis? Here's what you need to know! ⬇️

☀️ 1. Make sure you buy sunblock not sunscreen. What's the difference? Sunblock sits on your skin to help reflect UV rays, while sunscreen is absorbed by the skin.
☀️ 2. Avoid preservatives and chemicals
☀️ 3. no sunblock with added color
☀️ 4. Buy 30 SPF or higher
☀️ 5. Look for a broad spectrum label

Sunshine and limited amounts of UVB rays may help improve skin managing psoriasis, but too much sun can actually cause damage.

Treatments for psoriasis can actually make you more sensitive to the sun, leading to getting sunburned more easily.  This is why wearing and knowing which sunblock to use is extremely important. 👏
