The teacher is an indirect consumer of the child’s ABA therapy- therefore we have a professional relationship with the teacher, similar to the relationship we would have with the parent. We can be friendly but we are crossing that multiple relationship line if we are “friends”, which would not be in the best interest of our client and against our ethics code. Reported violations can result in the loss of your certification.

The ethical concern is this:Special need schools used to provide the staff and training needed to support the child in the school. This allowed the child to get quality care at school AND quality care after school in their therapies. Special need schools realized it costs them zero dollars to instead utilize the student’s ABA staff - so many schools have cut out quality training and hiring teacher assistants for the classroom- they instead use the child’s ABA therapy hours. School hours should NOT replace after school therapy hours because those after school 1:1 therapy hours are where intensive teaching happens- however, often they do because insurance companies will only authorize so many hours for so long. The underlying deficits are treated in the out of classroom, 1:1 therapy, giving the child the skills they need to thrive. Some ABA companies don’t care the child is only getting school hours because they are getting paid and some special need schools don’t care because it saves them money in hiring and training additional staff. Parents don’t realize their child is being cheated on actual intensive teaching because they think their child is getting “8 hours of ABA at school” and believe that must be meeting their child’s needs. I’m not saying in school therapy (especially in a general education setting is not necessary), I’m saying schools, especially special need schools that charge high tuition, should not be using the child’s RBT as a teacher assistant- instead they should staff and train according to the classroom’s needs.

We have seen RBTs split their time for their client with other students in the classroom! This is not only unethical but can be illegal if insurance is paying for those services. Often times, RBTs don’t know this and they are trying to be helpful but this is an ethical violation, BCBAs and ABA companies should inform RBTs and teachers on these guidelines.

An RBT and BCBAs job is to put yourself out of a job by getting your client independent in the classroom! Schools being open to transferring interventions to the teacher are key for this to happen! Getting out of the school means your client can use valuable hours in their 1:1 therapy after school, these 1:1 therapy sessions are necessary for meeting developmental milestones.

If we want to change the idea that RBTs are babysitters then ABA companies need to educate RBTs on when they should and should not be providing services. Your client’s precious hours can be used elsewhere and should benefit them - not wasted on babysitting. If a therapist is going to be in the classroom during movie day then the BCBA should make sure the RBT has goals they can work on with the child at that time, if not, then get out of the classroom because you are not doing your client any good and you definitely are not demonstrating what ABA should look like.

Hey ABA companies- are your clients your number one value or profits? Valuing your client means you train and supervise your staff, it means you provide ethical quality ABA, and it means your RBTs are implementing behavior analytic programs- not babysitting and wasting valuable therapeutic hours.
