Emotions give us important information, but they don’t always point us toward behaving in the most effective way. Opposite Action is a DBT skill in the Emotion Regulation module that helps us pause, identify the emotion we are feeling, check the facts, and choose to engage in behaviors that move us closer towards our goals rather than keep us stuck in our emotional urges.

This skill is not about ignoring or invalidating our emotions! It is about changing the outcome that can come as a result of acting purely on emotion.

Stillness can feel unfamiliar when your nervous system has spent a long time in survival mode.

Rest is not something you push through. It is something you practice, slowly and in small doses.

Over time, your body can learn that calm is safe.

If you’re ready to rediscover the safety in rest, we’d love to see if we can support you.

Friday Fun. . .

We post funny memes on Fridays because we believe laughter is therapeutic. We believe that accumulating joyful moments can help buffer us against distress. And we believe that even in pain, there can be moments of light.

When things feel overwhelming, unclear, or out of alignment, coming back to what matters to you can bring a sense of direction and steadiness. Notice what feels meaningful, and notice what feels off - this awareness is where change begins. Use this as a gentle check-in with yourself. Are you living in alignment with your values or have you drifted away from them?

When emotions feel overwhelming, your body is often in overdrive. The DBT TIP skills* help you regulate quickly in the midst of an emotional crisis.

TIP:
• T → Temperature: Change your body temperature (cold water on your face, ice pack). This helps blood flow from your extremities towards your heart and brain, slowing your heart rate and calming your nervous system.
• I → Intense Exercise: Short bursts of movement (jumping jacks, running in place) help to release built-up energy.
• P → Paced Breathing: Slow your breathing to signal safety to your body. Try inhaling for four seconds and exhaling for six seconds.
• P → Paired Muscle Relaxation: Tense and release muscle groups while breathing slowly to reduce physical tension. Pair tensing a muscle group with an inhale, and releasing the tension with an exhale.
These skills are designed for those high-intensity moments when thinking your way out isn’t enough. Start with your body, and your mind will follow.

*Not all of the TIP skills are appropriate for everyone. Check with your doctor first!
