Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder mainly affects school performance, but you and the school staff are a team. Here are the key ways to support your child's education:

๐Ÿ”น Enroll your child in preschool by age 4 to improve listening and organization skills.
๐Ÿ”น Consider starting regular school a year later (especially if their birthday is after June 1st) to help them mature.
๐Ÿ”น Work with classroom teachers who use techniques like front-row seating, breaking instructions into small steps, and using tasks to work off high energy.
๐Ÿ”น Talk to the school's special education team for an evaluation, as about 20% of these children also have a learning disorder.

Wishing our Cornerstone families a happy and healthy start to the 2026-2027 school year!

Switching from lazy summer days to early school mornings can be a big shift for kids (and parents!). To help your family ease into the new routine, here are 5 top back-to-school tips:

1๏ธโƒฃ Reset Sleep Routines Early

To help kids adjust, aim for a consistent bedtime and wake-up routine. School-age kids need 9โ€“12 hours of sleep per night, while teens need 8โ€“10 hours to stay focused and healthy.

2๏ธโƒฃ Fuel Up with a Healthy Breakfast

Kids who eat a balanced breakfast function better at school, have more energy, and possess a clearer mind. Include a mix of protein, whole grains, and fruit to keep them going!

3๏ธโƒฃ Establish a Homework & Study Zone

Set up a quiet, consistent, and well-lit workspace free from distractions like TVs or smartphones to build good study habits early.

4๏ธโƒฃ Prioritize School Bus & Commute Safety

Review safety rules with your child! Remind them to stand six feet away from the curb at the bus stop, wait for the bus to stop completely before board/exit, and use crosswalks if walking.

5๏ธโƒฃ Ease Back-to-School Anxiety

Itโ€™s normal for kids to feel nervous! Talk through their worries, highlight the exciting parts of school, and reassure them that their feelings are completely normal.

As always, the team at Cornerstone Pediatrics is here to support your family's health every step of the way. Have a safe and wonderful start to the school year!

๐Ÿ’™ Plenty of summer left to enjoy! But for many families, back-to-school season is here, bringing new routines, new milestones and plenty of emotions along the way. Over the next few weeks, weโ€™ll be sharing tips and resources to help your family start the school year feeling prepared and confident.

๐ŸšŒ For children starting elementary or middle school, riding the bus is often one of the first big steps toward independence. Itโ€™s exciting, but it can also come with some first-day nerves.

A few simple steps can help ease back-to-school anxiety:

๐ŸšŒ Stick to the bus routine from day one
๐Ÿ‘‹ Make a pick-up and drop-off plan
๐Ÿ›‘ Review bus safety rules together
๐Ÿ˜Š Help your child connect with a friend on the bus
๐Ÿ‘‹ Meet the bus driver before the first day, if possible

A little preparation can go a long way in helping your child feel confident and ready for the school year ahead.

School is just around the corner! Choosing the perfect backpack is a back-to-school tradition - but making sure it fits properly is just as important.

A backpack thatโ€™s too heavy or worn incorrectly can lead to shoulder, neck and back pain. To help keep kids comfortable and safe this school year:

โœ”๏ธ Keep backpacks between 10โ€“20% of your childโ€™s body weight.

โœ”๏ธ Choose a backpack with two wide, padded straps and multiple compartments.

โœ”๏ธ Pack heavier items closest to your childโ€™s back.

โœ”๏ธ Encourage kids to use both shoulder straps and adjust them so the backpack sits snugly in the middle of their back.

โœ”๏ธ Leave unnecessary items at home to lighten the load.

A few simple adjustments can help protect growing muscles and joints all year long.
