One of the most common questions we hear from people considering ketamine therapy is simple:

"Do I need to stop my antidepressants first?"

For many patients, the answer may be no.

A recent study of more than 300 patients found that ketamine and Spravato treatment outcomes were similar whether patients were taking SSRIs, SNRIs, other antidepressants, or no antidepressants at all.

That's important because it means exploring ketamine treatment doesn't necessarily require starting over with your current medication plan.

Every patient is different, and medication decisions should always be made with your provider. But the research offers reassuring news for people who have already spent years navigating medication changes and are looking for another option.

What if the problem isn't that treatment failed?

What if it targeted the wrong pathway?

For decades, depression treatment has largely focused on serotonin. For many people, that works. For others, it doesn't.

That's why treatment-resistant depression can be so frustrating. Not because people stop trying. Because they start wondering if they've run out of options.

New research offers a different perspective.

A recent study found that ketamine and esketamine helped patients improve regardless of whether they were taking SSRIs, SNRIs, other antidepressants, or no antidepressants at all.

The finding reinforces what makes ketamine different. It appears to work through brain systems tied to neuroplasticity and neural communication rather than the same pathways targeted by traditional antidepressants.

If you've tried to get better and still feel stuck, that's not proof that recovery is impossible.

It may be a sign that your brain needs a different approach.

Depression treatment doesn’t stop after the first signs of improvement.

One of the biggest challenges in mental health care is relapse—especially for patients who have already tried multiple medications without enough relief.

Our latest article explores how Spravato (esketamine) works differently from traditional antidepressants, why maintenance treatment matters, and how ongoing care can help patients sustain progress over time.

For many people with treatment-resistant depression, the goal isn’t just feeling better briefly. It’s building lasting stability.
