Why do nurses in very different countries show similar patterns of su***de risk?

That question is part of what pushed me to look beyond burnout.

Denmark and the United States have very different healthcare systems, economies, and social structures, yet research in both countries has identified elevated su***de risk among nurses.

That led me to dig deeper into professional identity, occupational psychology, and the traits healthcare often rewards: self-reliance, persistence, responsibility, compartmentalization, and emotional control.

Those traits can be adaptive. But when they become rigid during crisis, they may also contribute to concealment, shame, restricted options, defeat, and entrapment.

In this new Q&A with the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, I talk about the thinking behind my October 30 presentation and how I applied these ideas to patterns identified in National Violent Death Reporting System research.

What happens in a workplace after a su***de?

Too often, the answer depends on who is there, what they know, and whether anyone has ever planned for it.

I recently presented at the 21st European Symposium on Su***de and Suicidal Behaviour in Vilnius on why workplace su***de postvention needs to be treated as a system, not a one-time response.

A su***de can affect teams, leaders, trust, communication, psychological safety, workflow, and the broader culture of an organization. And when the response is improvised, inconsistent, or poorly governed, the response itself can add harm.

Silence can increase stigma. Poor communication can fuel rumor and mistrust. Managers can be left trying to support others without training. One-time referrals can miss people who struggle weeks or months later.

The question is not just, “Do we have an EAP?”

It is, “Do we have a system?”
